Three Statements to Affirm the Trinity
Three Statements to Affirm the Trinity
God is Three Persons
Each Person is Fully God
There is one God
God is Three Persons
God is Three Persons
The question one may ask is why does God have to exist in three Persons? The answer lies in the functionality of the Trinity. They are all one in unity but are unique in their function.
Trinity in creation
For example, let’s take creation. Each person of the Trinity had a role in creation. God the Father Spoke the creative words, Jesus carried out the spoken words, and the Holy Spirit sustained and manifested God’s presence over creation. Let’s look at these three functions of creation
Creation begins with “God said”
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
We see a series of “God said” statements that The Son of God carried out. How do we know it was Jesus that carried out the spoke word of God the Father? John 1:3
All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
We see here that all creation came into being through Jesus.
Also Col. 1:16
For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.
Paul states that everything was created by Jesus.
God Spoke, Jesus Created, and the Holy Spirit manifested God’s presence
The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
God makes His presence known by the moving of His Spirit over creation.
Trinity in Salvation
All three persons of the trinity have a function in salvation
God planned and sent Jesus to be our salvation. John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Jesus obeyed the Father and went to the cross for our salvation. John6:38
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
The Holy Spirit applies the salvation to the repentant person. John 16:7-11
“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;
and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
The Holy Spirit also directs us into the purposes of God 1 Cor. 12:7-11
But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;
to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
Each Person is fully God
Each Person is fully God
We see this in the eternal existence of all 3. All three Persons of the Trinity existed before the creation of the World. We know this by the unchangeable nature of God. If God exists in three persons today, then He existed in three persons before creation. He is unchangeable.
We also see that there was a relationship of the Father and the Son before creation. Ephesians 1:3-4
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love
Secondly, there is no difference in the nature of the trinity except in how they function with creation and themselves. They function in different roles when they relate to creation. They deal perfectly in relation to one another.
There is One God
There is One God
God is one in deity. He manifests Himself in three forms. They are all three one God because the only thing that differs is how the deal with us and how they deal with one another.
We have discussed how the deal with us. They deal with us in different function. For example God the Father did not come to earth and die on the cross. Jesus did. Jesus doesn’t come and apply salvation to our soul. The Holy Spirit does.
The way that the Trinity deals with one another is a difference. The Son and the Holy Spirit function in a subordinate role to the Father. This does not make them any less God than the Father. Besides the Son and the Holy Spirit always want to do the will of the Father.
