1 Timothy 1:8-11
Last week:
We have seen that Paul is writing to his son in the faith Timothy Paul is begging him to stay in Ephesus because there is a problem that he is concerned about which is.. he is worried about the false teachers plaguing the Ephesian church. Because there are these men that have missed the point, and they are misusing the law and are teaching false doctrines. They are disputing about things that lead to questions and its not really helping anyone And it is just causing useless talk and so Paul tells Timothy to stay away from these things because this helps no one! So Paul says in v.5 that instead we should… Love out of a pure heart - this is important because we can be teachers and we can know the Bible, but No matter how much we know or what we do if we do not love then it has no value Paul also says have A Good Conscience And a true faith
And not be to focused on creating questions and arguments
Because then it just leads to vain jangling.
And as we go and read v.8-11
We are going to see that Paul is going to talk about the law and who it’s for
8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
The first thing we are gonna see is that Paul is gonna show Timothy.
WHAT THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW IS.
we see that Paul as a former farisee he knew the law
Galatians 3:24 Paul says the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
v.25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
He knew that the law wasn’t our messiah It wasn’t our salvation But he knew that the law points us to Jesus who IS OUR SALVATION So Paul says we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully/ the right way
EXAMPLE:
we know that something is always good when we use is the right way even in every day life When we play soccer we use a soccer ball. MAKES SENSE But if we play soccer with a football it doesn’t really make sense. Just leads to confusion and questions. The football has a purpose but not really in soccer because you know you can’t use our hands in soccer so it doest really make sense
SO the PURPOSE OF THE LAW
Was to show us our sin
And to show us that we don’t measure up
That we need someone
And that someone is Jesus
So the law isn’t for righteous man but we see..
WHO IS THE LAW FOR
v.9-10 but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
- We see that the law was for SINNERS
- And Paul knew these people in the city of Ephesus
- And this gives us a reason of why Paul wanted Timothy to stay in Ephesus
- Timothy had a difficult task Because He had to deal with difficult people
and we see why he maybe wanted to leave
It was a Hard job Paul knew it was a hard place and I love how he wraps things up Because he starts with saying that the LAW CAN’T BRING RIGHTEOUSNESS BUT YOU KNOW WHAT CAN.. V.10 the glorious gospel of the blessed God
And This brings us to conclude that..
THE LAW IS NOT FOR US BUT SHOWS US THAT WE NEED A SAVIOR, WE NEED JESUS
BECAUSE the law is for sinners AND the Gospel and it is for everyone The Gospel is not to show us who we are.. like we saw in v.9-10 But the message of the gospel is that we’ve been guilty of these things and Jesus came into this world to set us free from sin and to wipe these things clean Now we can’t be good enough to save ourselves
The bible tells us that
But only through faith in Jesus is the only way we can be saved
Conclusion
SO TO WRAP THINGS UP
1. we saw that Paul showed us what the purpose of the law is for
The purpose of the law is..
to show us that we dont measure up and that we won’t ever be good enough to save ourselves But is our schoolmaster to bring us to Jesus and to realize that he's the only way to salvation
2. Paul shows that the law is not for the righteous. It's not for the people who are saved but those who have yet not put their faith and trust in Jesus.
3. We saw that
