A classic definition of Christian prayer is “an offering up of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to his will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgement of his mercies” (Westminster Shorter Catechism)
In the OT prayer was based upon a covenant relationship.
God made a covenant with Abraham in Gen 15
Abraham wanted one son, But God told Abraham you wouldn’t be able to count how many descendants you will have.
Gen. 15:5-6 “5 Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.”
And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” 6 And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.”
He also promised Abraham land
Gen. 15:7 “7 Then He said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it.””
Abraham interceding for the people of Sodom.
So The Lord had this soliloquy about his judgement of Sodom and Gomorrah.
The LORD had a double motivation for revealing the plan to Abraham
He said all nations will be blessed through Abraham.
And if Sodom is wiped off the map the nation wouldn’t be blessed by Abraham.
Abraham was to teach his offspring righteousness and justice so that they might enjoy God’s blessings.
Gen 18:23 “23 And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked?”
God you just told me who you blesses me will be blessed and who curses me will be cursed.
You said all the nations of there earth will be blessed because of me.
You told me my descendants will be more then the stars in the sky.
Lord you made this covenant with me and because you made this covenant with me I can come to you boldly.
Abraham was very passionate about saving the city because He rescued Lot after the kings of Sodom and Gormorrah fleed.
So Abraham recused all there possession of Sodom and Gormorrah.
And defeated the same person who they ran from.
