Introduction

Thanks Paul for filling in
One thing that comes to mind for all of us when we think about christmas is gifts right? If you say you dont then I dont believe you. Whether it is receiving gifts or giving gifts.
Can you think of the greatest gift you have ever received? I remember mine.....
Those gifts dont come free though when you give someone a gift, you sacrifice of your time money and effort. Sometimes more than we do at other times.
With the risk of being cheesy, the truth that we know to be true in the church is that the greatest gift of all time is Jesus Christ. He is the reason for the season.
Today I want to talk about 2 things and then we will wrap it up....
Each advent season I believe we should focus on two things
The gift that we receive and the gift that we give
THE GIFT OF CHRISTMAS COST MORE THAN YOU OR I COULD EVER AFFORD
There is one passage describes this gift and this sacrifice better than I ever could. Isaiah 53 prophesies of the sacrifice of the Son of God.

Who has believed our message

and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,

and like a root out of dry ground.

He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,

nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,

a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.

Like one from whom people hide their faces

he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

4 Surely he took up our pain

and bore our suffering,

yet we considered him punished by God,

stricken by him, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,

he was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was on him,

and by his wounds we are healed.

6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,

each of us has turned to our own way;

and the LORD has laid on him

the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted,

yet he did not open his mouth;

he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,

and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,

so he did not open his mouth.

8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away.

Yet who of his generation protested?

For he was cut off from the land of the living;

for the transgression of my people he was punished.

9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,

and with the rich in his death,

though he had done no violence,

nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,

and though the LORD makes his life an offering for sin,

he will see his offspring and prolong his days,

and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

Think about this passage for a second. If you have a child or a loved one that means the world to you. What scenario would you willfully give them up to die. And in what scenario would you even say it was YOUR WILL OR YOUR PLAN that you would give them freely.
You would only do that if you
Knew it was worth it. Think about that. God loves you so much that He says you are worth it to give the greatest gift that you could ever give
You knew you could cash the check. God is the only one who has the bank account to pay for the gift of salvation. It was out of an abundance of grace and mercy.
I know Paul spoke about the intricute plan of God and how it worked together but think about the story of Jesus.
You give the greatest gift ever and how do you do it? Not some giant entry with all kings bowing. Not some pride rock held up and the animal kingdom bowing down.
This is the story we get and how he comes
Mary is 9 months pregnant
Joseph is like hey there is a census we have to go to bethlahem
no travel worries
loads them up
there is no where for them to stay. Why? Shame and full
He was placed in a trough.
The greeting he gets isnt from the city or relatives or anyone but guess who shows up to the party shepherds
Yet this was the gift. From day 1 Jesus was in a place that was accesible to the LEAST OF THESE
Now you and I have been given the greatest gift ever, but scripture is indeed true when it says it is better to give than to receive and Christmas isnt just about receiving gifts but it is about giving gifts.
So what gift can we give God.
Commercial WHat gift can you give to that special someone that has everything.
Scripture says that God is Jealous over one thing. He doesnt need money or riches or fame. He just wants you. He wants to give you to give him your life and in return you receive life abundantly.
2 people to focus on in this lesson that have stricken me. Simeon and Anna. Look at Luke 2 verse

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,

you may now dismiss your servant in peace.

30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,

31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:

32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and the glory of your people Israel.”

33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

36 There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. u She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

Simeon
He believed what was promised to him and he continually served.
He didnt give up hope even when it would be easy to
He spoke truth in the midst of chaos
Anna
Her circumstances didnt define her faith in Jesus
She gave her life even when it didnt feel worth giving
She found satisfaction in searching for Jesus
