The presence of God, symbolized by the ark of the covenant, leads this ritualized procession. The river is in its springtime flood stage, but the waters miraculously part when the priests step into them, and all Israel crosses on dry ground (Exod 14:22). Two memorials are built out of standing stones: one in the river and one beyond, at Gilgal. There the men are circumcised, and Passover is celebrated. Gilgal will remain a rallying point for Israel (Josh 10:7, 43; 1 Sam 11:14; 2 Sam 19:15)

I. When the Priest Got Ready to Go across Jordan.

And Later on in this story Elijah the Prophet of God got ready to go across He just pulled His mantle off and smote the water ,and the water stopped ,when Elijah went up by way of a chariot and a whirlwind ,Elisha pick up Elijah Mantle and went back to the Jordan said where is the Lord God of Elijah and the Jordan open up again,But if it was not Miraculous you had to pick your spot in order to go across the Jordan.

III. Well ,when the Gileadite’s Captures the crossover point where you could get across the Jordan .They knew that the Ephraimites trying to go home could get home no other way without crossing the Jordan at that point they didn’t stand there collecting tolls they were standing there getting identification .
