Isaiah 9:1-7
The Coming Prince of Peace
Intro
As we planned out our Christmas Sermons since it is Christmas Season
I wanted to look at Isaiah 9
This morning I want us to dive into Isaiah 9 and see what it has to say this morning
Isaiah was written some 700 yrs before Christ
And as we look at the scripture in Isaiah we will see how it directly talks about the coming Christ
How cool is that
Church that is just one piece of evidence for you to believe the truth of the Bible, and that it was God's word to man, it was inspired by God and physically written by men
So this morning we open our Bibles to
Isaiah 9:1–7 NASB95
1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. 3 You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; They will be glad in Your presence As with the gladness of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil. 4 For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian. 5 For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire. 6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
As you read that remember this was written by Isaiah some 700 yrs before Christ
And as you read it especially in vs 6 and 7 we can see Christ all through it
Isaiah 9:1–2 NASB95
1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them.
Isaiah starts off chapter 9 with a but, because the previous vs says that distress and darkness and gloom and anguish is coming and they will be driven into darkness
He then says but
But a light is coming
And there will be no more darkness
For those who are in anguish they will be made glorious
For those who have been punished for sin a reprieve is coming
God had poured punishment for sin But
This morning we celebrate the but
This reason we celebrate this season is the But Isaiah talks about in chapter 9
The coming reprieve
That it will come from the shore county, the Galilean area
That those who have walked in darkness a great light is coming
A light that will extinguish the darkness
This is all in reference to Christ
As people today we can read the New Testament Gospel's and see how those authors use the text of Isaiah to describe Jesus who is the Christ
Matthew 4:13–15 NASB95
13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: 15 The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles
We can know Isaiah is true because Matthew used it talk about Jesus
So as we read this in Isaiah we can know that it is talking about the coming Christ
Today there are many people who are in aguish, there are many people who are walking around in darkness
Some of you here today may be walking around in darkness
And as we just read in Isaiah that was written some 700 yrs before Jesus, to say that a light is coming
A redeemer is coming
As we continue on in Isaiah
Isaiah 9:3–5 NASB95
3 You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; They will be glad in Your presence As with the gladness of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil. 4 For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian. 5 For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
When Isaiah is writing about 2 part
Their immediate future would be when the nation would grow, and when they would flourish as a nation
At some point we know the physical nation would grow when Isaiah is writing this
They would almost be to much for other nations to handle just because of their size
It was also about their being freed from the oppressors
When they would be free
Some of this did occur when the nation of Israel defeated Assyria and then to be freed from Babylon
It wasn’t just about what was going to happen to the immediate nation of Israel
It is also about what is to come for the future
When the nation would multiple to you and I
As believers we are sons and daughters co heirs with Christ
It is also about being truly free in the new heaven and new earth
When there would no more war and true peace because of that new heaven and new earth
Because of the coming savior
So those verses that were written some 700 yrs before Jesus we not only about the next few years of the nation of Israel but it was about what would happen about the coming Christ
See it is through the coming savior the promised Son of God that we would have eternal peace
As we continue with Isaiah
We come into probably one of the more famous pieces of Scripture
Isaiah 9:6–7 NASB95
6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
A birth announcement if there ever was a birth announcement
In the first few lines of Isaiah 6 we seen the humanity and the divinity of Jesus
A child will be born to show us that Jesus was fully human
A son will be given to us to show us the divinity of Jesus
That God loved the whole world that He God gave us His only Son
To pay for our sin so that whoever believes in Jesus might have eternal life
some 700 yrs before Jesus was born we see that His birth and His humanity and divinity were fortold
How amazing is that
Then Isaiah talks about how the government will rest on His shoulders that He will be the leader
That there will be no end to the increase of His government that His kingdom will reign forever
God promised Davids throne would be established forever
2 Samuel 7:16 NASB95
16 “Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”
That God would establish Davids throne forever
That Jesus is the seed of David the root of Jesse
We are seeing this being fulfilled through Jesus
Then to the names of Jesus
Wonderful
Jesus is so wonderful
There is nothing dull about Jesus
How wonderful it is that Jesus was born and came to the least of these for you and I
Counselor
Jesus is such a great counselor
How wise Jesus is and it is through reading Gods word and the Holy Spirit that, that wisdom is imparted to us
Mighty God
Jesus is the Mighty God
How powerful is God and He has the power to execute His wise plans
Eternal Father
Jesus is the eternal Father
Jesus beat death and will live forever
Those who have a personal relationship with Jesus because He was born of a virgin and died on the cross and then 3 days later rose to defeat death once and for all
Those who believe in Jesus will live forever with Jesus in Heaven
Prince of Peace
Jesus is the prince of peace
Jesus offers peace that this world and those of this world cannot understand
Those of you who do have a personal relationship with Jesus can have peace that is not of this world because of Jesus
How amazing and wonderful that some 700 yrs ago God gave us prophecy that His son would come and do some amazing things
So as we celebrate this Christmas season
This is what we celebrate
The promised Savior
So as we move to our time of invitation
Maybe you are here this morning and do not have a personal relationship with Jesus
And this morning you learned that Jesus’s life was promised some 700 yrs before His birth
If that is you this morning and you would like to begin a personal relationship or maybe you want to talk with someone about being saved this morning the altar is open
Or maybe you are here this morning and you already have a personal relationship and simply need to spend sometime in prayer at the altar this morning
