Look to Jesus

Mark 16. The Walking on the Lake (6:45–52)

Job 9:8 and 38:16 picture God as one who walks on water.

Dont look at the miracle, look at the miracle worker

We Don’t Have Anything

The people’s greatest need as a shepherdless flock was the teaching of Jesus

It was not food or clothing

They need truth to guide them to the one who provided all things

The disciples are still in need of this truth

They are still thinking according to worldly thoughts

EG: The Messiah came to free us from Rome, provide safety and prosperity for us in Israel

They needed to learn that they and everyone else needed Jesus only

Jesus will often remind us of this after we have been living in victory and success for a while

They had just returned from a successful missionary journey (6:12-13,30-31)

They were probably feeling pretty confident and invincible at that moment so Jesus says to them, “give ye them to eat” (37)

Jesus Plus Nothing Equals All that is Needed

Jesus is the provider of all things

He is able to meet the needs of the disciples and the crowds

But it was not about the miracle of the loaves, He wanted the disciples to see him as the miracle worker

He wanted them to trust in him to sustain them

To trust in him in every circumstance

“Maybe” this is the reason there are twelve baskets remaining

One for each disciple as a token of his providence

A reminder that he can do above and beyond what we can ask or think (Ephesians 3:20)

Hard Hearts Miss the Message

They missed the message so they needed to continually be taught (51-52)

Jesus not only taught the message of humility but modeled it for them

He rejected the crowds desire to make him King of Israel

He departed alone into the moutain to pray

In the mountain he was dependant on his father for protection and providence

As a man, he continually called out to his father for help and guidance

He reminded them of who he was

Don’t be afraid, It is I

Just as God told Moses as he sent him to Egypt (Exodos 3:14)

Job 9:8 and Job 38:16 show that in Jewish belief, God is one who can walk on water as its creator and master

Because they had not yet excepted Christ as Lord and Savior they could not live in peace

They saw his works and even did his works but they are missing the Savior

If we do all things in the name of Christ but do not have him, we have nothing
