Joy! God With Us / ¡Gozo! Dios con nosotros

Tras muchos años de depresión y luto, escribió el poema "Campanas de Navidad" recordándose a sí mismo lo que es verdaderamente importante en la vida, especialmente cuando se afronta la depresión y el luto.

After many years of depression and mourning, he penned the poem “Christmas Bells” reminding himself about what is truly important in life, especially when facing depression and mourning.

The poem echoes our hearts in the face of tragedy in our lives.

El poema se hace eco de nuestros corazones ante la tragedia de nuestras vidas.

A menudo nos lamentamos ante Dios de que "no hay paz... el odio es fuerte, y se burla de la canción de paz en la tierra, buena voluntad para los hombres" y Dios nos responde "Dios no está muerto, ni duerme; el mal fracasará, el bien prevalecerá, con paz en la tierra, buena voluntad para los hombres."

We often wail at God that “there is no peace… hate is strong, and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men.” and God answers us “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; the wrong shall fail, the right prevail, with peace on earth, goodwill to men.”

The list of tragedies that Longfellow suffered severely affected his mental health.

La lista de tragedias que sufrió Longfellow afectó gravemente a su salud mental.

He fell into a long-term depression that might be classified as a Major Depressive Disorder by today’s mental health professionals. Certainly his doctor might have prescribed anti-depressants to help him cope with all the tragedy in his life.

Let’s read the focal passage for today. We looked at Matthew’s account of the birth of Christ a couple weeks ago.

I wanted to return to this passage and focus on the name Immanuel, “God is with us.” Since we celebrate Christmas morning, we have much to be joyful for, whether there has been tragedy in your life this Christmas season or not, we can look to the birth of the Christ Messiah and consider it a joyful occasion.

Quería volver a este pasaje y centrarme en el nombre Emanuel, "Dios está con nosotros". I. God is With Us / Dios con Nosotros

As I was studying and preparing for this week, I was struck by the prophetic name for Jesus in the book of Matthew. Matthew 1:23, which quotes Isaiah 7:14....

14 Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.

Mateo, entonces traduce la palabra hebrea "Emanuel" al griego "Emmanuel" y la define como "Dios con nosotros".

Matthew, then translates the Hebrew word “Immanuel” into the Greek “Emmanuel” and defines it as meaning “God with us.”

This is a message of hope… hope in a dark time.

Este es un mensaje de esperanza... esperanza en un tiempo oscuro.

The Jews at this time were at one of the darkest points of their history.

What do dark places look like for us?

We often have dark places too. Most often—for us—our dark places look like job loss, financial upset, divorce, abuse, abandonment, among others. These situations often force us into a mindset of worry and depression. For some the worry extends from days into months and months into years. This can lead to mental health issues such as bipolarism and bring up suicidal tendencies. These issues are much more common than most people think and they should always be taken seriously.

If you’re suffering from any of these things, I encourage you to reach out to a trusted friend and seek medical and spiritual help to support you through your darkest days.

Sometimes the death of a loved one can turn the Merry of Christmas into MISERY.

The Good News is that there is a message of Hope in Christmas. The name Immanuel is a name of hope, meaning “God is with us.”

La Buena Noticia es que hay un mensaje de Esperanza en la Navidad. El nombre Emmanuel es un nombre de esperanza, que significa "Dios está con nosotros".

Aunque Jesús vivió y murió en la cruz, sabemos que resucitó y ascendió al Cielo para sentarse a la derecha del Padre Dios. Pero Jesús mismo nos prometió que estaría con nosotros. De hecho Sus últimas palabras registradas en el libro de Mateo (Mateo 28:20) son "Yo estoy con vosotros todos los días, hasta el fin del mundo."

Though Jesus lived and died upon the cross, we know that He was resurrected and ascended into Heaven to sit at the right hand of Father God. But Jesus Himself promised us that He would be with us. In fact His last recorded words in the book of Matthew (Matthew 28:20) are “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Most of Jesus’ I AM statements represent that He is asserting that He is God. He has many I AM statements that relate back to Exodus 3:14 when Moses stood before the burning bush as God declares “I AM WHO I AM.”

At first blush this seems like a paradox… It doesn’t make any sense to us… As He is leaving us to be with God, He tells us that He is always with us… Not only that, He tells us that He is still with us even until today… because we have not reached the end of the age.

A primera vista parece una paradoja... No tiene ningún sentido para nosotros... Mientras nos deja para estar con Dios, nos dice que siempre está con nosotros... No sólo eso, nos dice que sigue con nosotros incluso hasta hoy... porque no hemos llegado al fin de los tiempos.

So, even though He is gone, He is still here with us...That’s comforting!

Así que, aunque se haya ido, sigue aquí con nosotros... ¡Eso es reconfortante!

No sé cómo funciona, ¡pero sé que funciona! ¿Cuántos de ustedes saben que Jesús está aquí con nosotros ahora mismo?

I don’t know how it works, but I know it works! How many of you know that Jesus is here with us right now?

II. The Spirit is With Us / El Espíritu está con nosotros

We have talked a lot about the Holy Spirit over the last few months...

John 14:16–21 / Juan 14:16-21

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.

16 »Entonces Yo rogaré al Padre, y Él les dará otro Consolador para que esté con ustedes para siempre;

17 es decir, el Espíritu de verdad, a quien el mundo no puede recibir, porque ni lo ve ni lo conoce, pero ustedes sí lo conocen porque mora con ustedes y estará en ustedes.

17 He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.

One way that Jesus is with us is through the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that He gives us a Helper, that is always with us.

Una forma en que Jesús está con nosotros es a través del Espíritu Santo. Jesús dijo que nos da un Ayudante, que está siempre con nosotros.

Esta palabra que usa Juan es παράκλητος (paraklētos) en el griego. En español, "ayudante, consejero, abogado". La palabra es básicamente la misma que usaríamos para referirnos a un abogado en un tribunal, que se presenta ante el juez abogando en nuestro favor.

This word that John uses is παράκλητος (paraklētos) in the Greek. In English, “helper, counselor, advocate.” The word is basically the same as what we would use for a lawyer in a court of law, standing before the judge advocating on our behalf.

We have this Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who is actually pleading our behalf before God. This is the Helper that Jesus asked God to provide for us when he ascended into Heaven.

Tenemos un Abogado, el Espíritu Santo, que aboga por nosotros ante Dios. Este es el Ayudante que Jesús le pidió a Dios que nos proveyera cuando ascendió al Cielo.

Este es el mismo Espíritu que imparte el carácter de Cristo a nosotros cuando recibimos a Cristo como salvador. Esto es lo que hemos estado estudiando con el Fruto del Espíritu: amor, gozo, paz, paciencia, benignidad, bondad, fidelidad, mansedumbre y dominio propio.

This is the same Spirit that imparts the character of Christ to us when we receive Christ as savior. This is what we have been studying with the Fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Jesus hasn’t abandoned us, but He is with us through this Spirit! And we know that this spirit helps us to be with Jesus and Jesus helps us to be with the Father.

Jesús no nos ha abandonado, sino que está con nosotros a través de este Espíritu. Y sabemos que este Espíritu nos ayuda a estar con Jesús y Jesús nos ayuda a estar con el Padre.

III. God Help Me! / ¡Que Dios me ayude!

One thing that really helps me is knowing that the Spirit is interceding for me… Now, some of you know what I’m talking about, some of you might not be sure what that means. Paul tells us this in Romans 8...

26 In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Una cosa que realmente me ayuda es saber que el Espíritu está intercediendo por mí... Ahora, algunos de ustedes saben de lo que estoy hablando, algunos de ustedes pueden no estar seguros de lo que eso significa. Pablo nos dice esto en Romanos 8...

26 De la misma manera, también el Espíritu nos ayuda en nuestra debilidad. No sabemos orar como debiéramos, pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros con gemidos indecibles. 27 Y Aquel que escudriña los corazones sabe cuál es el sentir del Espíritu, porque Él intercede por los santos conforme a la voluntad de Dios.

How many of you have ever felt like that? So weak that you can’t even figure out how to pray… I know I have.

¿Cuántos de ustedes se han sentido así alguna vez? Tan débiles que ni siquiera saben cómo rezar... Sé que yo lo he hecho.

Ha habido momentos en mi vida en que he estado tan angustiado y agotado por las situaciones que cierro los ojos para orar y ... simplemente ... no puedo ... ni siquiera ... empezar a averiguar cómo orar.

There have been times in my life that I have been so distraught and worn out from situations that I close my eyes to pray and I … just … can’t … even … begin to figure out how to pray.

Have you ever been there? / ¿Has estado alguna vez allí?

Un pastor me dijo hace años, cuando me encontraba en esa situación, que me limitara a rezar: "¡Que Dios me ayude!".

I had a pastor tell me years ago when I was in that situation, to just pray “God help me!”

You know when life is just so stressed and burdened that we have no strength at all left within us to fight the daily battle called life, we have a way to communicate with God! We can just pray “God help me!” And the Holy Spirit knows exactly what to do with that...

Sabes, cuando la vida es tan estresante y agobiante que no nos quedan fuerzas para luchar en la batalla diaria llamada vida, ¡tenemos una manera de comunicarnos con Dios! Podemos simplemente rezar "¡Dios ayúdame!". Y el Espíritu Santo sabe exactamente qué hacer con eso...

Pablo nos dice aquí que "el Espíritu intercede por nosotros con gemidos indecibles."

Paul tells us here that “the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”

Do you know that word? / ¿Conoces esa palabra?

ὑπερεντυγχάνω (huperentugchanō) - inexpressible groanings / gemidos inefables

That word basically means “I got your back.” This is the work of a mediator, who pleads with God on our behalf. When we just can’t do it by ourselves, the Holy Spirit does it for us.

Esa palabra significa básicamente "te cubro las espaldas". Es la labor de un mediador, que suplica a Dios en nuestro nombre. Cuando no podemos hacerlo por nosotros mismos, el Espíritu Santo lo hace por nosotros.

¿Qué se siente al saber que tienes a alguien en tu equipo que te cubre las espaldas las 24 horas del día? Es una buena sensación.

How does that feel to know that you’ve got someone on your team that has your back 24/7? That’s a good feeling!

When I find myself in stressful situations and I go to God in prayer, I know that I don’t have to have all the words or put things just right. I know that I can be real with God and trust that the Holy Spirit is making things clear to God and that I can trust God to work on my behalf according to His plan, in His timing, and in His own way.

Cuando me encuentro en situaciones estresantes y acudo a Dios en oración, sé que no tengo que tener todas las palabras o hacer las cosas bien. Sé que puedo ser sincera con Dios y confiar en que el Espíritu Santo le está aclarando las cosas y que puedo confiar en que Dios obrará en mi favor según Su plan, en Su tiempo y a Su manera.

Eso me da una sensación de paz y consuelo al saber que no tengo que hacerlo bien y mantener la perfección ante Dios, cuando no estoy seguro de que pueda ni siquiera arañar la superficie de hacerlo bien.

That gives me a sense of peace and comfort to know that I don’t have to get it just right and maintain perfection before God, when I’m not certain that I can even scratch the surface of getting it right.

That’s part of what it means to have God With Us!

¡Eso es parte de lo que significa tener a Dios con nosotros!

¿Qué significaría eso para ti en tu vida? ¿Tener a Dios contigo y para ti? ¿En ti? ¿Trabajando a través de ti?

What would that mean to you in your life? To have God With You and For You? In You? Working Through You?

The Bible tells us that Jesus is the Immanuel, the God With Us. Jesus told His disciples that He would always be with us. Why don't we take Him up on that?

La Biblia nos dice que Jesús es el Emanuel, el Dios con nosotros. Jesús dijo a sus discípulos que siempre estaría con nosotros. ¿Por qué no lo aceptamos?

Cuando tenemos un vacío en la vida, intentamos desesperadamente llenarlo. Pero en ese proceso estamos escapando del dolor percibido y tenemos tendencia a tomar malas decisiones.

When we have a void in life, we desperately try to fill the void. But in that process we are escaping perceived pain and have the tendency to make poor choices.

We can instead choose to fill the void with Jesus and allow Him to bring healing.

En lugar de eso, podemos optar por llenar el vacío con Jesús y permitir que Él traiga la curación.

Conclusion

¿Y tú? ¿Tienes esa seguridad de tener a Dios Contigo en tu vida?

What about you? Do you have that security of having God With You in your life?

Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord? ¿Has aceptado a Jesucristo como tu Señor?

Do you have the power of the Mediator working for you? ¿Tienes el poder del Mediador trabajando para ti?

Or are you solo? Are you on your own in trying to deal with the problems in your life?

¿O estás solo? ¿Estás solo para tratar de resolver los problemas de tu vida?

Jesús nos prometió que podemos permanecer en Él y Él en nosotros. Y también tenemos acceso libre y completo al Espíritu Santo en nuestras vidas. Si no has escogido a Jesús y lo has hecho tu Señor, entonces te estás perdiendo de tener el poder de Dios obrando en tu vida.

Jesus promised us that we can abide in Him and He in us. And we also have free and full access to the Holy Spirit in our lives. If you haven’t chosen Jesus and made Him your Lord, then you are missing out on having the power of God at work in your life.
