Call to Worship
Oh Come all Ye Faithful 133 1
O come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him,
Born the King of Angels;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
Scripture
“Isaiah 7:13-14
Invocation.
Worship in Word and Song
The first Noel
The first Noel the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
in fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
on a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
born is the King of Israel.
Oh Little Town of Bethlehem
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see Thee lie
Above Thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in Thee tonight
Hark!
The Herald Angle Sing 137 1
Hark!
The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!”
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th’angelic host proclaim,
“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”
Refrain:
Hark! the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”
Joy to the World
Joy to the World, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.
Message
Start:
Entice: Christmas Eve is like the finish line of Christmas.
We have been waiting.
We have kept watch with the shepherds,
observed the sky with the Magi,
awaited contractions with Mary (and Joseph),
and this year, we have spent some time seeing Christmas through the eyes of
good-ol’ Charlie Brown
and the Peanuts gang.
The wait is nearly over.
Engage: In the darkness of Christmas Eve, we come together to think only of Christ.
To sing a few familiar and favorite Carols and to recall the humility of the Word who came among us to save us
Expand: The song says “may your days be merry and bright…” It is more important for them to be blessed and significant.
Christmas gives us a pause to remember all that Jesus did, and those things we can do in faithful response.
Excite: Christmas is best when it flows from faith.
Explore:
This Christmas Eve we are reminded that a waiting world need wait no more!
Expand: Tonight I wish to focus briefly on Him, and the attributes we remember on this the night we celebrate His birth.
Gabriel, when sent to Mary in Nazareth to announce His birth said this about Him and His conception.
Body of Sermon:
Luke 1:31–33 (ESV)
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.
And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Tonight we want to reflect on
1 His Name & Nature
Jesus
Son of the Most High
The Son of David
A sin wearied world needs to reflect as well on
2 His Righteous Rule
Reign over God’s people
Reigning age upon Age
Shut Down
From focusing on His birth we want to turn now to focusing on His life of ministry.
During winter and into spring, we will consider His life, then turn our focus to the passion.
His death, burial, and resurrection were only possible because of His coming at Christmas, God with us—Savior and Lord.
In sharing the Lord’s Supper together on Christmas Eve the Church is reminded of the link between Cradle and Cross.
