His birthplace: “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.” (Micah 5:2 ESV) “In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David.” (Luke 2:1–3 ESV) 2. His birth: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14 ESV) “And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.” (Luke 1:34–35 ESV) 3. His ministry: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour …” (Isaiah 61:1–2 ESV) “And Jesus began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”” (Luke 4:21 ESV)) 4. Betrayal by a close friend for 30 pieces of silver: Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.” (Psalm 41:9 ESV) “I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ … After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”” (John 13:18, 21 ESV) “Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”” (Matthew 27:9-10 ESV) [cf Zech 11:12-13, Jer 19:1-3] 5. His death by crucifixion: “So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.” (Numbers 21:9 ESV) “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. (John 3:14-15 ESV) “So Pilate delivered Jesus over to them to be crucified.” (John 19:16 ESV) 6. Soldiers gambled for his clothing: “… they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” (Psalm 22:18 ESV) “When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,” (John 19:23–24 ESV) 7. His body was pierced: “… they have pierced my hands and feet—” (Psalm 22:16 ESV) “But he was pierced for our transgressions …” (Isaiah 53:5 ESV) “… on him whom they have pierced” (Zechariah 12:10 ESV) “But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.” (John 19:34 ESV “… Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side…” (John 10:27 ESV) 8. None of his bones were broken: “… you shall not break any of its bones.” (Exodus 12:46 ESV) “They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break any of its bones; according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it.” (Numbers 9:12 ESV) “But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.” (John 19:33 ESV) 9. Buried in a rich man’s tomb: “And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.” (Isaiah 53:9 ESV) “When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.” (Matthew 27:57–60 ESV) 10. Taking our sins upon himself: “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:5–6 ESV) “… call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”” (Matt. 1:21 ESV) He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” (1 Peter 2:24–25 ESV) “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29 ESV) 11. Raised to life, 3 days after his crucifixion: “For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption (Psalms 16:10 ESV) [cf Acts 2:31] He shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.” (Isaiah 53:10 ESV) “… so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:40 ESV) “… for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.”” (Mark 9:31 ESV) 12. Coming back to earth again: “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:13–14 ESV) ““Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.” (Revelation 1:7 ESV) [cf. Zechariah 12:10] “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 ESV)
