Isaiah 61:1-11
Isaiah 61:1-11
Pray
Breifly speak on these verses
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.
These verses speak of a coming Messiah.
God gave Isaiah the Word of promise that the Messiah would come and He would usher in an age of grace.

1. Isaiah declares that this Messiah would be anointed to proclaim Good News.
He would proclaim good news to the poor in Spirit. Those who have no hope.
He would come to bind up the brokenhearted.
Our Messiah will set free the captive, releasing them from darkness.
In faith there is freedom from sin and darkness.
This Messiah will come to proclaim both the day of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance.
On His first appearing, He brings mercy and grace to those who cling to His name.
When He returns, He will bring judgement to the enemies of God.
He will walk in wrath as He destroys the works of evil.
He declares comfort to those who mourn.
The word comfort is the same that we talked about before.
It means to be consoled, but also to be avenged.
The suffering we endure on this earth due to the hand of the devil will be avenged by this Messiah.
He will give those who mourn a garland instead of ashes.
Oil of gladness instead of mourning.
And the mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.
By faith He will encourage those who trust in Him to know that we are in His hands.
He has lost none.
We have the promise of a resurrection.
Because we can have confidence in who the Messiah is, He makes us into oaks of righteousness so that He may be glorified.
Because of verses 1-3, we can walk in the promise of verses 4 and 5.
They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations. Strangers will shepherd your flocks; foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.
Specifically, Isaiah is referring to a time when Israel would be returned from exile.
We know these events to be historically true.
But I believe we can also glean a spiritual teaching from these verses.

2. God is telling us that in faith we can be reconciled.
3. First to Him, then to others.
We can rebuild the ruin that sin has caused in our lives.
We can be reestablished on a firm foundation.
V.6
And you will be called priests of the Lord, you will be named ministers of our God. You will feed on the wealth of nations, and in their riches you will boast.
Because of what has been said thus far.
Because we have the promise of the appearing of the Good News, we are called priests of the Lord.
You will be named ministers of God.
I don’t know about you but this makes me excited.

4. We are His witnesses.
His people.
His inheritance.
“For I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery and wrongdoing. In my faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants will be known among the nations and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the Lord has blessed.”
The Lord is a God of justice.
He hates robbery and wrongdoing.
In context here, the verses address greed.
The Lord is addressing some of the wicked behavior of the people in leadership during the time of Isaiah.
They functioned in self-interest putting the well-being of others to the side.
God declares that we should act in justice.
Especially those who are in leadership.
They are required to be an example of God as they lead the church.
We must be diligent to not allow greed, self-interest to pervert leading with integrity.
God reminds us of the everlasting covenant that He has established with His people.
The covenant involves proclamation of truth.

5. Those who belong to God are witnesses of His mercy.
Through their testimony, the Name of the Lord is made great.
Because the Name of the Lord is made great and the Word of the Lord is passed on to the next generation, they will be blessed.
They will continue to be a Light to those who look upon them.
V. 10-11
I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations.
The voice of the one speaking in this chapter appears to have changed.
The voice of the speaker in verses 1-9 appear to be from the promised Messiah.
He is declaring the work that He will come to accomplish.
He is also declaring the provision that He will make for His people.
Obviously, these promises could never be kept by a mere mortal.
They can only be upheld by God Himself.
In verses 10 and eleven, the voice speaking appears to be from Isaiah.
He recognizes the promises given by God.
Because God declares these things, Isaiah states that He is clothed with garments of salvation.
Isaiah is given a robe of righteousness.
Brothers and sisters, in faith we have been given this same robe.

6. We have been adorned with the robe of righteousness, and the hope and truth and peace from God.
We are adorned in this way because of what Isaiah says in verse 10.
“as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.”
The bridegroom is adorned with an everlasting priesthood because of the Salvation He offers at the cross.
He is the great High priest.
The bride is given jewels.
The bride is given these jewels as a sign of the beauty of Salvation.
The wedding is set, and the preparations have been finished for the marriage supper of the Lamb.
This chapter concludes with verse 11.

7. Like the planting of the earth brings forth fruit.
8. So does the Lord harvest righteousness and praise from His people.
These verses in Isaiah speak of the Good News of God
They speak of hope.
They speak of a coming Messiah who would encompass the entirety of the promises.
Turn to the book of Luke
Luke 3 -Jesus was Baptized.
The Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove and the voice of God comes from heaven declaring that Jesus is beloved.
Luke 4 -Jesus goes into the wilderness and is tempted by the devil.
For 40 days, Jesus endured a trial.
He was tempted to abandon His calling.

9. Jesus overcame by the power of the Word.
Immediately after this time of trial, we have the events recorded in verses 14-16.
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,
Jesus returned to the Galilee after enduring this trial in the wilderness.
He began teaching.
This is the beginning of what is considered the public ministry of Jesus.
This is the point at which He began to walk in the purpose of His coming to us.
Look at verses 17-19
and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Jesus went into the synagogue.
He stood up to read from the scroll.
Now He did not choose what to read.
This reading would have been part of the reading cycle of the Scripture.
Jesus was handed the scroll as it was opened to the reading for that Sabbath.
Jesus reads the words recorded by Luke:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Jesus reads these words that were written all those years ago by the prophet Isaiah.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.
He has anointed me to proclaim the good news.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom.
He has given me the task of opening the eyes of the blind.
In other words, to help them see the hope and truth of Salvation.
The Lord has sent me to remove the burden of the oppressed.
and to proclaim the year of the Lord.
To proclaim the year of the Lord.
To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor alludes to the year of Jubilee.
This is the year when debts were forgiven and slaves were set free.
Jesus is proclaiming that He has come to liberate us from the captivity of sin.
To set us free from the bondage of our sin nature.
Isaiah goes on to say in these verses that in the appearing of Jesus, the clock is set for the day of vengence .
It is this day that He will return to pour put His wrath upon evil.
Therefore it is now that we are given opportunity to receive His mercy.
Jesus reads these words.
In the middles of the synagogue on the Sabbath day.
He reads these words in the midst of rabbi’s and priests and scholars of Scripture.
Jesus reads these words and then,
Look at verse 20-21
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
This must have been shocking to those listening.
As I stated, all those in attendance would have known that Isaiah wrote a prophecy declaring the coming of the Messiah.
The Anointed One.

11. Jesus proclaimed His purpose and Divinity at the reading of these words.
Jesus is the embodiment of the promised Messiah come from heaven.
Jesus divine, has come to usher in the age of grace.
Now is the time to accept this gift.
To turn from sin.
To receive Salvation.
Today is the day.
Turn to Luke 2
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
It is this day that we remember the birth of our Savior.
