Turn your Bibles to John 20
Turn your Bibles to John 20
1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb.
2 So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
3 So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb.
4 The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first;
5 and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in.
6 And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there,
7 and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself.
8 So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed.
9 For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.
10 So the disciples went away again to their own homes.
Why are we talking about the resurrection of our Lord today?
Why are we talking about the resurrection of our Lord today?
normally a pastor will tell the story of the birth of our Savior.
we must understand that on today, is the day that we celebrate the birth of our Lord.
I will not get into the rant of talking about Christmas traditions and history of this day or any other.
we, as believers are walking celebrations.
celebrations of being in Christ. Being Children of God, being His sheep.
All because Jesus was born, lived, died on the cross and rose again for our sins.
we would have none of this....unless Jesus was born, died and rose again.
so with this I title this sermon
Angels.....Two Special Announcements…That lead to our foundation of Faith
Angels.....Two Special Announcements…That lead to our foundation of Faith
lets look at something
Turn to Luke 2:6-18
Mary and Joseph are going to be registered, and Mary is with child,
not the seed of Joseph, but of the Holy Spirit.
6 While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth.
7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened.
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people;
11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
12 “This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”
15 When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.”
16 So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.
17 When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child.
18 And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.
see, fear
announcement
wonder (go)
Jesus is born
once this happens the first people who are informed of this are Shepherds.... to you see?
Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11)
these guys are on watch, watching and keeping their flocks at night.
Angels appeared.
amazed at this great sighting.
They make the announcement
announcing that birth of Our Lord. (peace on earth - no longer at war with God)
worshipping God’s glory in His Birth
immediately the Shepherds (amazed) in awe, and hurried / leaving to see.
We have our savior who is born.
1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave.
2 And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it.
3 And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.
4 The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men.
5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified.
6 “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.
7 “Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”
8 And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples.
‘we see….
‘fear.
announcement
instruction (go)
Jesus rose again.
Jesus rose again.
after an earthquake the stone is rolled away.
An Angel appeared sitting on the rolled away stone.
They make the announcement
announcing that Jesus has rose again.
worshipping God’s glory of the promised resurrection of our Lord
defeating death with His life.
God used angels to make two important announcements
His Birth
His Resurrection
Our hope for salvation is in our savior being born
it was written in prophecy:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
Immanuel: “God with us”
Oh how much God loves us
The hope, to cries of all creation, from the time of Adam’s sin to this point.
The savior is here, He has come to take away the sins of the world. to end the age old war between God and man
Jesus said it Himsele.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Peacemakers - are ones that is dealing with a situation where peace is threaten, or absent
this is one who response to a world or thinking of hostility.
a peacemaker is one who seeks peace and pursue it.
if you are in Christ, and teach Christ, you are a peacemaker
you will be called - Sons of God
Meaning that God Himself will know make you Him, acknowledging you as part of His covenant people.
All of this because we have a Savior that is born.
Our Joy in salvation is because of His resurrection.
Jesus, our high priest, Our true vine, has humanly defeated death.
For in Him is life, He has given us life. (John 10:10)
death could not hold Him (Acts 2:23)
So how can death hold Him?
Our faith stands on Jesus’ rising from the death.....
14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.
so as we acknowledge this day remember that us who are in Christ must remember everyday.
the fact that we are on borrowed air, every second we need to think the Lord that we are here.
That we have a savior, who was...
born
lived
died
and Rose again.
and angels share in this joy, of salvation and hope
“In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
let this be something that we remember everyday,
Amen.
