John Introduces Jesus

John 1:1–5 ESV

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

JESUS - God’s “son”. Introduced as God in the beginning… as the very word’s (logos) of GOD the Father as the Holy Spirit was hovering of the face of the deep. Those words… “Let their be light” - no wonder jesus is the light of the world. The plan in the mind of the triune God before those words were uttered and the foundation foundation of the world was laid. A plan that Jesus (a member of the triune God) would become a human an our precious gift of redemption(Eph 1:4 ) … that Jesus would pay our price, and buy our freedom from Sin .. and Jesus make the way for our us to inherit the kingdom prepared for us (1Pe 1:20).

Thorough out the reading of the birth narrative today… please pay close attention to the things that speak of Jesus being God’s SON… His DEITY put into human flesh.

Prophetic Announcements

Much of Isaiah 9 is about Jesus… it starts with the prophesy of the land of Galilee seeing a great light… a land living darkness… it goes on...

Isaiah 9:6 ESV

6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Like many prophesies in the bible there was a dual nature to them an immediate application that when fulfilled was designed to attest to the greater longer-term prophesy. (as Godly authentication if you will)… Like this next one about the the sign of a special son being born to a Virgin.

Isaiah 7:14 ESV

14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

In the Septuagint the translation of the Hebrew into Greek leaves little doubt that the long-term prophesy was about a real virgin Birth

Micah 5:2 ESV

2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

The Announcement to Mary

Luke 1:26–38 ESV

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Announcement to Joseph

Matthew 1:18–21 ESV

THE BIRTH OF JESUS

Luke 2:1–7 ESV

1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Regarding the word “INN” κατάλυμα (katalyma)—appears three times in the New Testament. IN the birth Narrative is is called “INN” but later when the disciples go to find a place for the disciples to have the passover it is translated “Guest Room”. it is not the same word used in the Parable of the Good Samaritan So effectively they went to a house that guest room was full so they they were offered the Stable area of the home. - the place were their animals, would be kept safe at night.

Announcement to the Shepherds

Luke 2:8–12 ESV

Luke 2:16–20 ESV

Like the shepherds that went to tell others of what they had heard and seen, that is our command from Jesus today… that is why I like.. this next Christmas hymn.

The Dedication of Jesus

Luke 2:21–24 ESV

21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”

Simeon was waiting for Jesus

Anna the Prophetess teaches

The Wise Men Worship

What are the days of Herod?

what exactly are Magi? - wise men from the east. Daniel had who How many we do not know but they brought 3 gifts so tradition has three wisemen.

Is Astrology bad? YES, Looking for the stars or horoscopes to guide your steps is absolutely bad - you should only look to GOD, the only true and wise and loving person who can guide your steps. any other source invites the enemy of your soul to guide you. But the Magi were seeing a sign in the heavens and wanted to know what it might mean.

Why then have them visit Jesus? How did they know a king of the Jews was being born? star or Daniel? we believe the the Magi were a group of wise men that were following the ways of Daniel the Hebrew wise man whose service spanned 2 kingdoms and many keys both Babylonian and Persian. their gifts show that they were ware of Daniel Chapter 9.

why were they looking for a star?

this was a long journey

why is everyone disturbed? King Herod -- who had been the reigning “king of the Jews” for 30 years already! He did not have a Jewish royal bloodline and was supported by rome, -- Obvioulys He would be “troubled” to discover that there was someone somewhere out there who had been “born King of the Jews”.

7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”

The First Noel

Matthew 2:12–14 ESV

12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. 13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt

Matthew 2:15–18 ESV

15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”

Moving to Nazareth

Matthew 2:19–21 ESV

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.

Upon Herod's death, (in either 5,4 or 1 BCE or 1 AD)or the Romans divided his kingdom among three of his sons and his sister: Herod Archelaus became ethnarch of Judea, Samaria, and Idumea; Herod Antipas became tetrarch of Galilee and Peraea; Philip became tetrarch of territories north and east of the Jordan River; and Salome I was given a toparchy including the cities of Jabneh, Ashdod, and Phasaelis.

This date is based on Josephus’s remark in Antiquities 17.6.4 that there was a lunar eclipse shortly before Herod died. This is traditionally ascribed to the eclipse of March 13, 4 B.C.

Unfortunately, this eclipse was visible only very late that night in Judea and was additionally a minor and only partial eclipse.

There were no lunar eclipses visible in Judea thereafter until two occurred in the year 1 B.C. Of these two, the one on December 29, just two days before the change of eras, gets my vote since it was the one most likely to be seen and remembered. That then dates the death of Herod the Great into the first year of the current era, four years after the usual date.
