What we can learn from the NEXT PART OF THE STORY: The One Worth Waiting For (2:21–40)
Ephesians 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
SVCC is built by God, upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
We are joined together by union with Christ, we are growing, and we are a dwelling place of God by his Spirit.
INTRODUCTION:
Review:
WHY?…
TODAY: What comes next?
Opening Scripture:
18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.
19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
“pondering them in her heart”
shepherds returned

What we can learn from the NEXT PART OF THE STORY: Luke 2:21–40:
1. Obedience
1. Obedience
21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Genesis 17:12 “12 He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring,”
Lev 12:3 “3 And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.”
PAIN - circumcision according to the law
NAME - obedience to the divine messenger
GK - Jesus (without strong “J”…more like spanish)
HB - Joshua, which means God is salvation
2. Purification
2. Purification
22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord
The temple is the start and end of narrative:
Luke 1:9 “according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.”
last verse:
Luke 24:53 “and were continually in the temple blessing God.”
24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”
Lev. 12:8 “8 And if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean.””
Sin offering - for unknowingly committing a sin
Burnt Offering - dedication to God (i.e. whole burnt offering)
FINANCES
3. Redemption
3. Redemption
22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord
23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”)
Number 18:15 “15 Everything that opens the womb of all flesh, whether man or beast, which they offer to the Lord, shall be yours. Nevertheless, the firstborn of man you shall redeem, and the firstborn of unclean animals you shall redeem.”
FINANCES - why is there no mention of ransom money…unredeemed until the cross or because of audience of Luke?
4. Waiting
4. Waiting
TIME
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,
28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,

LUKE 2:33 “33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.”
36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin,
37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.

GOD SPOKE IN THE INTERTESTAMENTAL PERIOD
38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.
1 Sam 2:19 “19 And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.”
1 Sam 2:26 “26 Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man.”
1 Sam 3:19 “19 And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.”
Conclusion/Reflection:
1 Sam 2:21 “21 Indeed the Lord visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew in the presence of the Lord.”
