I. Scripture refers to these men as wise men!

King James Version (Chapter 2 Verse 1)
Now when Jesus was born in Beth-lehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem

II. Why were they referred to as wise men?

I am sure that there are many reasons for them being called wise men. But I would like to give you 4 reasons tonight!

1. They discerned the Signs of the times.

Now when Jesus was born in Beth-lehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

They actually discerned the sign in the heavens.
We three kings of Orient are; bearing gifts we traverse afar, field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star.
Just like when Jesus appeared in that manger in Bethlehem there was a sign in the heavens and the wise men discerned it. Jesus is going to return again and there are signs not only in the heavens but also on the earth.
People you are not in darkness but in the light.
1 Thessalonians 5:1-8
But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
The fact is that you do not have to be a christian or be in church to necessarily see these signs!

3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 5 And they said unto him, In Beth-lehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6 And thou Beth-lehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

These wise men were from afar. And they were wise not because of their upbringing. Not because of what denomination they belonged too. Not because they were raised with a Jewish background. But because they were able to discern the signs of the times.
You would be wise tonight to discern the signs of the times!
They not only discerned the signs of the times, but in discerning these signs, they also discerned the Son of the times!

2. They discerned the Son of the times.

Now when Jesus was born in Beth-lehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
They realized that He was a King!
They realized that He was worthy of all worship! They realized that the journey was worth it!
star of wonder, star of light, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.
Born a King on Bethlehem's plain, gold I bring to crown him again, King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign.
Frankincense to offer have I; incense owns a Deity nigh; prayer and praising, voices raising, worshiping God on high.
“I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” (John 1:1-5)
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)
You see I believe that to some degree they discerned the significance of the times.

3. They discerned the Significance of the times.

When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb.
Glorious now behold him arise; King and God and sacrifice: Alleluia, Alleluia, sounds through the earth and skies.

4. They discerned the Situation of the times.

When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Beth-lehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

They discerned that there was an enemy that wanted to rob them of their Savior. They were not going to let the situation rob them of their Savior!

III. The wisest thing you could ever do this Christmas season is to discern the signs, discern the Son, discern the significance, and discern the situation.

You will find me when you seek for me with all your heart!
