Luke 2:1-20 What Did We Get For Christmas?
Merry Christmas! Around the world, people woke up to gifts around a Christmas tree, children excitedly tore off the paper to find things they were hoping for.
Usually, my parents will come over to see my family and see what they got for Christmas. The kids will start hauling all the things out, and will give them a Christmas show and tell show.
It doesn’t happen as much now as I am older, but occasionally, someone will ask me, what I got for Christmas.
Well, to answer that question, all we have to do is look here in Luke 2, to find the answer.
[Read Scripture]
What we were given at Christmas from God far exceeds anything that can be found in retail stores. The gift that our heavenly father was not wrapped in expensive paper but instead wrapped in swaddling clothes.
The gift that God gave to us did not come in a box where the batteries are not included, it came through a woman that was placed there by the Holy Spirit. This gift is Jesus friend. The greatest gift ever given. Think about this gift for a moment. Through this gift we received:
Point 1. Joy
· Some gifts don’t bring us joy do they. Ugly shirt or tie, or a box that has a thousand pieces.
· This gift God gave, doesn’t require assembly, it is a gift that will put a smile on your face and joy in your heart.
Point 2. Grace
· Can you think of the most expensive gift you ever received? Was it a car? A house? An expensive piece of Jewelry? Maybe it was a pet?
· God gave the most expensive gift to us, by giving his Son. When He gave Jesus, He gave us Heaven.
Point 3. Salvation
· The angel told us that a Savior had been born! God gave us salvation.
· God provided a way for us.
· How many of us would love for someone to come and clean our house for free? They would clean it and fix it.
· Well, that is what salvation is all about. Jesus coming and cleaning and fixing our lives.
Point 4. Relationship
· This gift we got for Christmas is not some inanimate object that sits on a shelf, it is a relationship with a best friend.
Point 5. Eternal Life
· Through this gift, we get the blessing of eternal life. Just think, with Christ in our life, we have a life that will live on forever.
· There ain’t another gift that can do that!
When someone asks you what you got for Christmas, will you tell them you got Jesus? There isn’t anything else that compares to him.
