16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
Some scholars say that the latter part of this verse was a song, or part of a hymn in the first century church.
It reminds of something very important and that is that Jesus was born to be a king!
The day Christ was sentenced by Pilate, He said,
John 18:37 (KJV 1900)
37 ...Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
I mentioned last Sunday that I really enjoyed singing Christmas carols. I love the fact that we started at the beginning of December and honestly, I’m being honest…It wouldn’t bother me one bit to sing them all year long.
The reason I feel like that is that too often we stop singing about Jesus’ birth too quickly. What I mean by that is for many people, they celebrate Jesus’ birth on Christmas day, and then set Him to the side like Christmas decorations.
We just box ‘em up and throw them in the attic, or basement, or outbuilding.
It’s easy to celebrate a baby in a manger, but it can be challenging to carry Jesus’ message into the world throughout the year.
Paul said it this way,
17 From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.
What he is saying in that verse is that he was tired of all the nagging of the Judaizer…They criticized everything about him, they questioned his integrity, and you know what his answer was? Look at me! Look at the battle scars he bore because of his devotion to Jesus…Paul lived a challenging life, but oh my, what a champion in the sight of God!
Paul didn’t only celebrate a baby in a manger, he carried the message of Jesus Christ ‘til the end!
1 Timothy 3:16 teaches that Jesus, who came to earth in the flesh, proved the truth of all He said and did.
The Bible backs up every bit, and I don’t have time to get into all this tonight ‘cause we’d be here two hours talking and I think I’m going to preach it Sunday, but in short, I preached it last Sunday out of Hebrews 2, Christ was made perfect through His sufferings…He died on a cross, and rose from the dead, and ascended to Heaven.
I think sometimes we lose focus that the books written in the Canon of Scripture were all by physical people who knew Jesus personally, as in they spoke with Him directly, they saw Him with their own eyes, they handled Him, they walked with Him!
Jesus, after His resurrection, ascended to Heaven, and by the way, more than 500 people witnessed that with their own eyes! He told us...
Matthew 28:18 (KJV 1900)
18 ...All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Jesus was born not just to be a king, but to be the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He should be the song of our lives! We should worship Him daily, not just once a year.
