We know the Christmas story, probably so well we can almost quote is straight from Matthew and Luke.
We know the facts of the story, we even get a few glimpses into the minds of the people that make up the story (Mary, Joseph, the wisemen and the shepherds). But what about Jesus?
What was Jesus thinking about on the first Christmas?
There is a point at which the 2nd person of the Trinity, the Son of God humbled himself and became a man.
We don’t understand the details of that, but we know it happened. But what was on His mind in those moments?
Because, if you understand what Jesus was thinking that first Christmas, you understand the true meaning of Christmas. And if you understand the true meaning of Christmas, you understand the true intentions of God. And if you understand the true intentions of God, then we will understand why He is worthy of our worship. Paul tells us about the mind of Christ on Christmas. Maybe not the mind of the baby boy, but the mind of the second person of the trinity, the son of God.
Philippians 2:4–11 CSB
4 Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others. 5 Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. 7 Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, 8 he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death— even to death on a cross. 9 For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow— in heaven and on earth and under the earth— 11 and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
- He wasn't thinking about Himself as Paul tells us to have the mind of Christ as we put others above ourselves. It is not outlandish to think that the God of the universe was thinking of you and me the moment before he became man. How incredible a thought that is. - He was thinking about a future much more amazing than we could ever imagine. A future where every knee would now to Him and every tongue confess that He is King. That's heaven by the way. And heaven was on Jesus's mind that first Christmas day. And it ought to be on ours as well since it is what our hearts long for. - Finally, the cross was on the mind of Christ that first Christmas as well. That might sound odd, but Jesus knew why he was born. It wasn't to live a good life for people to follow, He came to die for sin. He humbled himself to become a man, but didn't stop there, he was obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Jesus knew why he came, he knew the work he was sent to accomplish, and he knew whom he came to save. When we wake up tomorrow and think of our lord may we remember His humility, his obedience, and may we remember His incredible love.
