Read vs 27-30 Lusting
- Vs 27 They have heard it said, Thou shall not commit adultery
- Vs. 28 whoso ever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart!
- One of the 10 commandments: Exo 20:14
- Anyone caught doing it at this time was to be put to death! Lev 20:10; Deu 22:22-24
It starts by looking
- Shechem and Dinah Gen 34:2 “And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.”
- Potiphars wife Gen 39:7 “And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.”
- David with Bathsheba 2 Sam 11:2 “And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.”
James talks about lusting:
James 1:14-15 “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”
Paul informing the church at Corinth that had problems with fornication:
1Co 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1Co 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1 cor 6:18 Flee fornication!!! Be like Joseph when Potiphar’s wife come after him.
This is a huge problem in our country because:
The way men and woman dress in movies, tv shows, porngraphy is growing every year, the way our society dresses in public and at the beach/ pool!!!!
How we over come: Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Same Language as in Matt 18:8-9 where talking about causeing one of Gods children to stumble
Read vs. 31-32 MDR
Mankind has made this subject very hard, but the Bible is clear on the subject. Teacher- “I’m tired of explaining it- read Matt 19:3-9 & Matt 5:31-32.”
The Jews would divorse a woman for any reason!! Once the woman was divorsed she was considered unclean and very vulnerable
It hath been said!!! Back to vs 20 Scribes and Pharisees saying thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not commit adultery, now whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement.
- These things where all in the Law of Moses, but the pharisees and scribes were using this to the point where people could divorce for whatever they wanted.

Deuteronomy 24:1-4 (KJV)

1 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
2 And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.
3 And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;
4 Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
-Moses gave this law to protect the woman.
- What would happen to a woman put away??
Lev 20:10 And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

-V2 thye Phaisees ask question
-vs10 The disciples ask the question.
- Jesus response clear in 11-12
What is the one exception? Matt 19:9 & Matt 5:32
- Read Matt 19:3-12
- Look at their question!
- 19:3 The Pharisees ask Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
- Matt 19:7 The Pharisees ask question: Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
- We see they even admitted that Moses commanded them
This is a subject we need to know! IT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM with mankind since the beginning. But God made it simple, marriage is for life. People ask the question on it, have them read Matt 5:31-32 & Matt 19:3-12 and let God tell them threw His inspired Word.
- God’s original plan was for one man to have one wife for life in Gen 2:18-25 where God established the first marriage which would be the pattern for mankind to follow.
- We see what happens when man does not follow Gods plan, not only does it lead to sin, but divided families, broken lives, and troubled children.
- God allowed Moses to give instructions to regulate what was being done in order to protect the marriage in Deut 24:1-4.
- When Jesus was questioned about the subject, He went back to the beginning to the pattern that God laid.
- Jesus disciples seen how serious the marriage really was as there reply to it would be better to not marry.
- As Christians we need to teach this to our children and grandchildren so they know how serious marriage really is, if they understand this, they will be more careful at picking out a spouse.
- And Lord willing pick out one who is a Christian, because one thing you are never guaranteed to do is convert someone after marriage. If there is division in the marriage in regard to religion, it will only cause further problems down the road.
Read Matt 5:33-37 Oaths
- Lev 19:11 Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.
- Lev 19:12 And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.
- Jas 5:12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.
- Jesus quotes Isaiah 66:1
What must a Christian speak? Nothing but the truth!!!
- Let you yes be yes, and no be no. A Christian should not swear by anything.
- A Christian should be known by his very word.
- We should be known as honest people.
- We should not make promises, because we are not guaranteed to keep them.
- How can you promise to do something tomorrow, when we are not guaranteed tomorrow??
- We see so much lying in our world today, and most people do not trust people and that is why they make promises and swear.
- As Christians we must be of our Word, a lie is a lie, even a little white lie.
Joh 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
- We see it all over the world people saying I swear to_________!
- We must never swear, but let our yes be yes, and no be no. We should be known by our spouse, our family, the church, and even the community that we will do what we say. We should not have to make a promise, if we are always of our word then people will trust us when we say something.
- There will come times when you may not be able to do something you tell someone you will do, because things can come up in our life that might stop us. But we must own it, make good communication with whoever it was you told you would do something and make things right.
Read Matt 5:38-42 Retaliation
- Quotes from Exodus 21:24; Lev 24:18-20; and Deut. 19:21.
- Read Exodus 21:20-29!!!
- Notice this was to those who murdered, if a master struck his servant where he died, he should be punished. The death penalty. Life for life vs 23
- But if he struck his tooth or eye to loss then he was to set him free, not have to sacrife his own tooth or eye.
- Notice if a man struck a woman to where her baby died, was to be punished. Life for life. Wouldn’t it be nice if the world viewed abortion in this way. God views that baby as a child, not as some just cells in the body.
But back to Matt 5:38-42
- The Pharisees had twisted the Law, by taking vengeance into their own hands.
- If someone took someone’s eye by accident or fighting or what ever they put it as an eye for an eye. But the Law was in reference to corporal punishment, the animal or person that killed someone on purpose was to give his life for that life.
- We see how easy it is to pull verses out of context, the scribes and pharisees did it to fit in their teachings, we see denominations doing it today to fit in their teachings, and sometimes even preachers of the Lords Church can be guilty of pulling verses out of context to fit their lesson or hobby horse they are on.
- One of my teachers at Southwest always says read 10 verses before and after the text you are trying to use, and ask your self does the text mean what you are wanting to use it for in teaching?
- Another thing we must realize is these laws were given to judges, and not to the public to do as they wanted. When something was to happen they went and seen the judge over them who handled the matter.
- Deut 16:18 “Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment.”
- Just like today in America, we have courts and judges who handle peoples problems.
This language of a tooth for a tooth an eye for an eye, this is all dealing with vengeance.
- As Christians we learn its much harder to walk away then it is to fight back, but something we must do.
- Think about taking a blow directly to the face, it would make you very mad and upset, yet Jesus ask us to resist those natural feelings of fighting back.
- Harder said then done!
Read Romans 12:17-21
- Build a bridge. As Christians we striving to bring peace between God and man. When someone does us wrong and we take vengeance into our own hands then we are no better than they are.
- Vengeance belongs to God.
Vs 40 If a man sue thee and take thy coat, let him have cloke also.
- This was the inner and outer garment they wore.
- The principle is to be willing to give whatever the person needs.
- Ever heard the term give them the shirt off your back.
- A Christian should be willing to give someone anything they need.
Vs 41 who ever compels you to go a mile, go with him twain.
- The Romans would get people to carry stuff for them for one mile.
- A Christian however goes two miles.
- Christianity is known as the second mile, because we are willing to go the extra mile to show our devotion to God.
- As Christians we should always be striving to help others anyway we can.
- We see someone in community with cancer or handicapped and has need, we should be there to help. Your neighbor has cancer and you see the yard looks like a jungle, don’t talk about it but go mow it for them, go the extra mile to help.
Read vs. 43-48 Love Your Enemies
- How hard is this to put into practice??
- Rom 12 :18-19 try to live peaceable with all men.
- Try to build the bride, by always doing your part.
- What is the first thing we should be doing when some one is mean to us, when someone is a jerk? Pray for them!
- Think what did Jesus do when He was being persecuted to death? Did He practice what He is preaching in His sermon? We must be willing to put into practice the same way, it is harder said than done, but as a Christian we are to be Christ like. We should ask ourselves what Christ would do in the situation we are in before taking action.
Vs 45 wouldn’t it be interesting if the Bible said it would only rain on the yards of Gods children?
God makes the sun and rain on the good and the evil!
Vs 46-47 Matthew the author what was he before being a disciple?
- We have to have a different Heart.
- We should never look at people condemning them!
- We at one time were in their shoes and need to be long suffering and merciful like God was to us to them.
As Christians we need to Love our enemies.
- This is harder said than done, just like a bunch of Jesus teachings on the Sermon of the Mount are.
- But it is something we must learn to do.
- A lot of people do not understand the true meaning of Love. To really love our enemy is to seek his best interest.
- Think how God must feel with the behavior of mankind today? Yet He showers us with blessings and takes care of all of our needs still.
Read 1 John 3:18-24
- Our love must be something that is not only said but shows.
- We have been commanded to love one another as Jesus loved us.
- Think about He loved us so much He came to this earth to be persecuted, mocked, and yet die for us while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.
- We need to show that very same love to our enemies. If we are showing that kind of love, then evangelism is easy. People must see we truly love them by our actions.
- If we are condemning people and going and telling them the Bible says this, and they gonna go to hell if they do that then we will never help spread the Gospel but only be a stumbling block to them.
- You read about the Church after being established in Acts ch 2, the people were coming together daily having fellowship with one another, they were providing for one another’s needs, and the church had favor with ALL the people, and the Lord added to the church daily.
All of these teachings from our Lord are harder to live then said, but they must be lived in the Christian.
- We must take all of these teachings to heart.
- If we see one we are lacking in then we must work on it.
Vs. 48 Be ye therefore Perfect!
- We know nobody is perfect, but our attitude should be to strive to being perfect.
- Read Philippian’s 3:12-15
- 2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and isprofitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
- 2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
