I. Introduction

The 5 Sola’s
Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)
Sola Gratia (Grace Alone)
Sola Fide (Faith Alone)
Solus Christus (Christ Alone)
Soli Deo Gloria (To the Glory of God Alone)
Romans 3:21-26
Righteousness
the quality of being morally right or justifiable.
God is completely righteous
“The Bible’s standard of human righteousness is God’s own perfection in every attribute, every attitude, every behavior, and every word. Thus, God’s laws, as given in the Bible, both describe His own character and constitute the plumb line by which He measures human righteousness.”
Wickedness
Romans 3:10
Self-centered
No reverence for God
No respect for man
Have you ever asked someone to give you their honest opinion of you?
Who is Christ?
God
John 1:1 NASB95
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The way
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
The true vine
John 15:1 NASB95
1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
Our substitute
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

II. The Promise of Christ

Genesis 3:14–15 NASB95
14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
Isaiah 7:14 NASB95
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
John 1:14 NASB95
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

III. The Position of Christ

King of Kings
Revelation 19:16 NASB95
16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
High Priest
Hebrews 4:14 NASB95
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
Redeemer
Galatians 3:13 NASB95
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—
Mediator
1 Timothy 2:5 NASB95
5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
Head of the Church
Colossians 1:18 NASB95
18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

IV. The Purpose of Christ

Do the will of the father
John 6:38 NASB95
38 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
To serve
Mark 10:45 NASB95
45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Save sinners
Luke 19:10 NASB95
10 “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
To destroy the devil and his works
1 John 3:8 NASB95
8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.
To reveal the glory of God
John 1:14 NASB95
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

V. The Propitiation of Christ

Romans 3:25
1 John 4:8-10
Propitiation - appeasement or satisfaction. Two parts
appeasing the wrath of the offended
being reconciled to the offended
“God does not pardon our sin. The punishment for our sin was taken out on Jesus. Christ is our substitute”

VI. Conclusion

2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
God is righteous
We are wicked
Christ payed the price
We receive the righteousness and avoid God’s wrath through Christ Alone.
That is why salvation is ...
By Grace alone
Through Faith alone
In Christ alone
“I must listen to the Gospel. It tells me, not what I must do, but what Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has done for me”
- Martin Luther
Verse 1 In Christ alone my hope is found He is my Light, my Strength, my Song This Cornerstone, this Solid Ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My Comforter, my All in All Here in the love of Christ I stand
Verse 2 In Christ alone, Who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless Babe This Gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save ‘Til on that cross as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live
Verse 3 There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave He rose again And as He stands in victory Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ
Verse 4 No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the power of Christ in me From life’s first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No power of hell, no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from His hand ‘Til He returns or calls me home Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.
