Worry: Fruitless and Unfaithful

Background

This verse is part of the greatest discourse ever.

Its part of Jesus’ sermon while He was sitting on the side of a hill near Caprekneeaum.

This discourse starts in chapter 5 verse 1 and goes through all but the last two verses of chapter 7.

It was so different that in Matt 7:28-29 that the people were shocked by not only what Jesus says but the way that He says it.

Matthew 7:28–29 ESV

28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Jesus was primally teaching His disciples but so many people had followed Him out to this spot that the numbers grew way beyond just the ones close to Him.

He was teaching them the ways of the kingdom.

Here in verse 25 of chapter 6 He starts teaching them about how as followers of God they don’t have to worry about their needs being meet, that God would meet all their needs.

Because of The Master Worry is Fruitless

We don’t have to worry about our needs being provided because God will supply our needs not wants but needs.

We don’t serve a God that does not know how we want and need for things; Christ made himself flesh He knew hunger, cold, hot, thirsty, tired, rejection, anything that we know He knew too.

Who better than Him to help us when we need something.

This verse starts out “therefore” which refers back to verse 24 which says: Matthew 6:24

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

In verse 24 Jesus declares that a christians only master is God.

He is saying that “because God is your master I say to you do not be worried.

Because of The Master Worry is Unfaithful (v 25)

For us as believers worry and anxiety are forbidden, foolish, and sinful.

The phrase “For your Life” here in this verse makes the command all-inclusive.

“psyche” The greek word for life here is a comprehensive word that encompasses all of a persons being.

Physical

mental

emotional

spiritual

Absolutely nothing in any aspect of our lives, internal or external, justifies our being anxious when we have the Master that we do.

The english term Worry comes from an old German word meaning to strangle, or choke.

That is exactly what worry does, it is a kind of mental and emotional strangulation, which probably causes more mental and physical afflictions than any other single cause.

Worry is the opposite of contentment, which should be a believers normal and consistent state of mind.

Paul says it best in: Phil 4:11-12

Philippians 4:11–12 ESV

11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.

A christians contentment is found in God, and only in God.

In his ownership, control, and provision of everything we possess and will ever need.

First, God owns everything, including the entire universe.

Psalm 24:1 ESV

1 The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,

Second, a Christian should be content because the Lord provides everything.

1 Chronicles 29:12 ESV

12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.

Third, believers are to be content because the Lord provides everything.

Jehovah-Jireh which means “the lord who provides.

This is the name that Abraham ascribed to God when he provided a lamb to be sacrificed in place of Isaac.

Genesis 22:14 ESV

14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

Philippians 4:19 ESV

19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
