The Covenant Renewal originated with Charles Wesley in 1775
The purpose was to effect a renewal of faith
Through a renewal of the covenant with God
I think there is merit to this tradition
I thought of the Old Covenant that was established between God and the people pf Israel
Exodus 24:3–8 NASB 2020
3 Then Moses came and reported to the people all the words of the Lord and all the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words which the Lord has spoken we will do!” 4 And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. Then he got up early in the morning, and built an altar at the foot of the mountain with twelve memorial stones for the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 And he sent young men of the sons of Israel, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed bulls as peace offerings to the Lord. 6 Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and the other half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it as the people listened; and they said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient!” 8 So Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”
We learn as the story of the Bible unfolds that this Covenant was temporary.
It looked forward to a better covenant.
The story continues later as His death approached Jesus talked about His blood was the for a New Covenant
Matthew 26:28 NASB 2020
28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.
You see the Old Covenant was looking forward to a better Covenant with a better and perfect sacrifice
The writer of Hebrews developed this further
Hebrews 9:13–15 NASB 2020
13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the violations that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
From time to time I think it is good to remind ourselves that we are in a covenant with God
To confess our failures in keeping the covenant.
To renew our vows concerning this covenant.
Paul pointed out a renewal in the passage we read earlier 1 Corinthians 11:25-27
1 Corinthians 11:26–28 NASB 2020
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. 27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy way, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a person must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
And with that in mind that is what we are doing today.
Renewing our vows in regard to this covenant, recommitting our lives to him
Reminding ourselves that Christ is to be birthed in us, our lives are to be changed as we seek to live a life God can bless.
So together let us confess failures then renew the covenant - Refer to Notes from Book!
