Gifts Of The Holy Spirit

Today we going continue our series of the living Bold.
With that in mind we are going be looking first at what it means to Walk in the Spirit. Then we are going to begin to look at gifts of the Spirit
Galatians 5:16–18 NKJV
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Romans 6:14 NKJV
For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Galatians 5:19–25 NKJV
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Romans 8:5–9 NLT
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)
How to walk in the Spirit
Obedience: when we walk in obedience that is walking in the Spirit.
Hearing His Voice: This is not head knowledge. It’s something that’s down on the inside of you. Something you can’t shake. It’s what I call down in my gut feeling.
Hearing His Voice through His Word: This a time when you have been reading the Word of God, all of sudden a passage you have read many times. Come alive to you, you see new revelation from passage. That when His Word is no longer Logos it become a Rhema word. Another way to put it is that that chapter or verse comes alive to you that a Rhema word.
1 Corinthians 12:10 NLT
10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,* while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.
Discussing the five fold ministry and how Prophets
Ephesians 4:11–12 NLT
11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.
The Gifts of the Spirit
LET LOVE LEAD
All of the gifts should come out a place of love for God and other
1 Corinthians 13:1–3 NLT
If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it;* but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
PROPHECY
1 Corinthians 12:10 NLT
10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,* while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.
The Word Prophesy: One who teaches, refutes, reproves, admonishes, and comforts others
Differentiate between when someone Is prophesying through the preaching of Scripture and foretelling of prophecy.
1 Corinthians 14:1–4 NLT
Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy. For if you have the ability to speak in tongues,* you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit,* but it will all be mysterious. But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.
Let me point out a few things here
If you speak only in tongues you are speaking to God V2, tells us.
You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit. You will be strengthening yourself only, because no one else will understand you V’s2&4.
This is what I call Paul’s litmus test for prophecy look at verse v3.
1 Corinthians 14:3 NLT
But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.
Strengthens others
Encourages others
Comforts other
1 Corinthians 14:4–6 NLT
A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church. I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy. For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened. Dear brothers and sisters,* if I should come to you speaking in an unknown language,* how would that help you? But if I bring you a revelation or some special knowledge or prophecy or teaching, that will be helpful.
When one speaks a word of prophecy the whole church will be strengthened V,5.
If we only come together and speak in an unknown languages that is not going to help anyone. V,6.
If I and speaking a word you can understand a word of prophecy that will bring a Revelation, some special Knowledge, or prophecy or teaching, that is helpful V,6.
Ability To Interpret
1 Corinthians 14:5 NLT
I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy. For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened.
If tongues are interpreted than it holds the same value as prophecy because people have understanding.
INTERPRETATION: the action of explaining the meaning of something.
TRANSLATION: the process of translating word or text from on language to another.
So an interpretation is not a word for word translation is an action of explaining the meaning of what has been said.
1 Corinthians 14:7–13 NLT
Even lifeless instruments like the flute or the harp must play the notes clearly, or no one will recognize the melody. And if the bugler doesn’t sound a clear call, how will the soldiers know they are being called to battle? It’s the same for you. If you speak to people in words they don’t understand, how will they know what you are saying? You might as well be talking into empty space. 10 There are many different languages in the world, and every language has meaning. 11 But if I don’t understand a language, I will be a foreigner to someone who speaks it, and the one who speaks it will be a foreigner to me. 12 And the same is true for you. Since you are so eager to have the special abilities the Spirit gives, seek those that will strengthen the whole church. 13 So anyone who speaks in tongues should pray also for the ability to interpret what has been said.
Speak In Unknown Languages
As a Pentecostal church we believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We believe in speaking in other tongues as sign of someone being filled with Holy Spirit.
We see many places in the Book of Acts where people would receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit and they would begin to speak in of tongues.
Personally I speak in tongues in my prayer time, and at times God has move on me to speak out in the gift of tongues. He has also used me in the interpretation of tongues.
In my private prayer time I understand that when pray in the Spirit it benefits me
Jude 20 NLT
But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit,*
1 Corinthians 14:2 NLT
For if you have the ability to speak in tongues,* you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit,* but it will all be mysterious.
1 Corinthians 14:4 NLT
A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.
Let say this, praying in the Spirit is not always praying in tongues. It’s also you and I being open to the Holy Spirit to hear his voice and how to pray over a person or a situation.
I tell people when you are praying for someone don’t just pray over them in tongues. That not helping them, it’s building you up but not them.
Yor can pray quietly to yourself and allow God to speak to you on how you should pray for that person.
Gift Tongues In The Church
1 Corinthians 14:13–17 NLT
13 So anyone who speaks in tongues should pray also for the ability to interpret what has been said. 14 For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying. 15 Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit,* and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand. 16 For if you praise God only in the spirit, how can those who don’t understand you praise God along with you? How can they join you in giving thanks when they don’t understand what you are saying? 17 You will be giving thanks very well, but it won’t strengthen the people who hear you.
Be Wise In The Use Of Tongues
1 Corinthians 14:18–25 NLT
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than any of you. 19 But in a church meeting I would rather speak five understandable words to help others than ten thousand words in an unknown language. 20 Dear brothers and sisters, don’t be childish in your understanding of these things. Be innocent as babies when it comes to evil, but be mature in understanding matters of this kind. 21 It is written in the Scriptures*: “I will speak to my own people through strange languages and through the lips of foreigners. But even then, they will not listen to me,”* says the Lord. 22 So you see that speaking in tongues is a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is for the benefit of believers, not unbelievers. 23 Even so, if unbelievers or people who don’t understand these things come into your church meeting and hear everyone speaking in an unknown language, they will think you are crazy. 24 But if all of you are prophesying, and unbelievers or people who don’t understand these things come into your meeting, they will be convicted of sin and judged by what you say. 25 As they listen, their secret thoughts will be exposed, and they will fall to their knees and worship God, declaring, “God is truly here among you.”
The Summary
1 Corinthians 14:26–33 NLT
26 Well, my brothers and sisters, let’s summarize. When you meet together, one will sing, another will teach, another will tell some special revelation God has given, one will speak in tongues, and another will interpret what is said. But everything that is done must strengthen all of you. 27 No more than two or three should speak in tongues. They must speak one at a time, and someone must interpret what they say. 28 But if no one is present who can interpret, they must be silent in your church meeting and speak in tongues to God privately. 29 Let two or three people prophesy, and let the others evaluate what is said. 30 But if someone is prophesying and another person receives a revelation from the Lord, the one who is speaking must stop. 31 In this way, all who prophesy will have a turn to speak, one after the other, so that everyone will learn and be encouraged. 32 Remember that people who prophesy are in control of their spirit and can take turns. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of God’s holy people.*
