Has someone else made you a promise that seemed impossible to keep?
How did it end?
Have you ever made a promise like that?
Wouldnt it be great to have promises made by someone you know would absolutely keep them?
Thats what we are looking at today.
Genesis 17:15–17 ESV
And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.” Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
This is after God already promised the same thing to Abram before.
How did that go?
Abram and Sarai decided to have a child through her servant and they had Ishmael.
As the spiritual leader of the family, Abram should have taken control and said no to his wife.
Back to the text, before the blessing we see that God changes Sarai’s name to Sarah
Genesis 17:15 ESV
And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.
Names are important. We saw for Christmas that the Angel gave Elizabeth and Zachariah the instruction to name their baby John
Likewise the angel told Mary and Joseph to name the messiah Jesus.
We
Genesis 17:18–19 ESV
And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!” God said, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.
Why did God reject Ishmael?
That wasnt the promise.
God fufills His promises His way,
If we try to make things happen and its not His will then God will not go along with it.
Genesis 17:20–21 ESV
As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I have blessed him and will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He shall father twelve princes, and I will make him into a great nation. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year.”
Usually God does not bless things that happen when its not His will.
In this case God did bless Ishmael,
The ultimate plan of salvation, beyond blessing Abram with Children was to bring the messiah
That was only going to happen through Sarah and their own son, Jacob
At this point God has come to Abram 2 separate times to tell him that He will be blessed with a son, but its not Ishmael
Genesis 18:1–3 ESV
And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.
Verse 1 says that the LORD appeared to Abram, but Abram saw 3 men.
Abram saw them and bowed down to them, in a position of submission.
Abram said, “O Lord” as if
Then Abram tells Sarah to make some food for the 3 individuals there.
Lets jump to the next verse.
Genesis 18:9–15 ESV
They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
God is the promise keeper,
