The Light of Christmas

ME/WE
The lights of Christmas are all around us. Christmas trees, lights on houses, Christmas light shows, etc. Christmas lights even have marquee places in our favorite Christmas movies- the Grinch tightening a bulb on the tree to light up the village with lights once more, the snow out the window being illuminated by the glow of the Christmas tree as Ralphie and Randy’s mom and dad gaze out (not to mention the infamous leg lamp), the Griswold’s light fiasco, the light of the Polar Express flooding into the young boy’s room, etc.
Nonetheless, I want to draw your attention to the true Light of Christmas.
GOD
Read John 1:1-5
God is light- and all separated from Him is darkness. Think about the very first Christmas Eve: the world sat in darkness, mired by sin and guilty of rebellion against the God of the Universe. Sin had lethally plagued humanity and separated people, God’s most magnificent creations, from having a relationship with Him- the relationship that we were created and designed for. Far and wide, humanity dwelled in darkness- separated from Him, apart from the one true Light.
However, John 1 continues on to share about the Light that would soon dawn on humanity.
Read John 1:9-14
Jesus, the Light of the World and God Himself, entered into this world over 2000 years ago as the most beautiful Light ever. This Light came into the world with radiance and brilliance- a Light that would chase away darkness.
Some of Christ’s very own would not recognize Him. Some would reject Him. Yet, for all that would receive Him, He gave the right to become Children of God (verse 12). Born again not with a physical birth, but with a supernatural birth from God. Reconciled to live in restored relationship with the God of the Universe. While we were yet sinners who could never earn the love of God, love came down to rescue us. The Light came down to illuminate those in darkness and bring to life what was dead.
YOU
Have you received the free gift of God’s miraculous mercy and grace that was on full, radiant display that night in Bethlehem? God longs for you to recognize that you could never earn His love or mend what is broken between you and Him.
Have you been born again? You can be brought from death to life by believing in Christ’s sinless life, His death on that cross of Calvary, and His triumphant resurrection.
Have you received the Light of Christ?
WE
As we light the candles in this place tonight, remember that this candle represents the Light of Christ. And if you have received the Light Of Christ in your life, this is a time of celebration. If you have not received the Light of Christ, let this be your invitation. Don’t wait- come to Him tonight. Open your heart to Him.
