Genesis 1

Genesis 1:1–2 ESV
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:27–31 ESV
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Genesis 1 highlights the creation story. This story gives life to the entire Bible, here in creation there is no sin. Sin enters in a few chapters later in chapter 3. On each day of creation God creates something new and it is completed with the creation of man. In the final verse of the chapter it says that God looked and saw everything that he had made and it was good. This points my mind straight to the gospel because this is the beginning of it. There are two main ways that I use for remembering the gospel; the first one is God, man, Christ, response. The second is; creation, fall, redemption, restoration. Both of these are saying the same thing, the gospel begins in creation with God. We see here that God deems everything good, there was no sin. I feel as though this is hard for us to get our minds around fully but at this point in time there was no need for salvation. As you read later you will see that the reason for the need of salvation was the sins that Adam and Eve committed. Through the first man sin entered into the world. Here in chapter one though there is no sin, it is perfection. After the fall where sin enters into the world there is an echo of this creation when the new creation is described. God created this world and man messed it up but God promises to bring restoration in the form of an entire new creation that is pictured much like the one seen in genesis 1. This new creation is described in Isaiah 65.25 where it says “The wolf and the lamb shall graze together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent’s food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.” This verse is of course not alone in describing the good things that God will do once again. If it were not for sin we would still live in the world created in Genesis 1 but because of sin we live in that world after it has been cursed. This chapter lays a foundation for the entirety of scripture and helps us see what it was that God originally intended.
After this chapter we see the fall where sin enters into the world and eventually sin gets so bad that God wipes the face of the earth with a flood but he preserves a man named Noah and his family. There are many events that happen and people introduced as we travel through the beginning history of the world. next week we will look at a man named Abraham as he goes to sacrifice his son and we will see the purpose of this in the grand scheme of the Bible.
