What is the Holy Spirit?
When we talk about the Holy Spirit, I often feel there is sort of this guard we all put up. I think in part with that is different charismatic denominations and pastors.
Here is what the Holy Spirit is not. He is not some force that is like the force in Star Wars. The Holy Spirit does not enable to force push someone. The Holy Spirit is not some ghostly type thing that shows up every-now and then. The Holy Spirit is not some genie in a bottle that we call on when we get in a situation.
Here is what we know of the Holy Spirit, he was present in the creation of the world. The Holy Spirit is a man, John 16:7-8 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:” The Holy Spirit was the one who helped Jesus in His earthly ministry, He was present and caused the conception of Jesus in Mary’s womb. He was with Jesus during his time of Earthly ministry. The Holy Spirit was the power that rose Jesus from the dead. And the part of the Holy Spirit that we are going to key in on this morning is that the Holy Spirit is alive and in work in a believers life today.
Answer this question, What does the Holy Spirit do for a believer?

Why we stand
Romans 8:1-11 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells …”

V. 1-4 The Spirit has set us free from the old Law
Exposition
V. 1- There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus
We have to ask the question, what is the therefore, there for?
Context
In Romans 7 we see Paul diving into the law of the Old Testament period.
He sets up Chapter 7 with the analogy of a woman being bound to her husband through the law of marriage. So if a woman is to marry another man, or be with another man while her first husband is alive, she is to be an adulteress. But if her husband is to die, then she is free of the binding of the law.
Ask the question of is the law in of itself sin? in Verse 7
Of course not! We are the ones who taint the law with sin. The law is good, we bring our sin to the law.
Verses 13-25 Highly debated especially verse 15. Romans 7:15 “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.”
Is Paul speaking as a non-believer, a recently born again (young) or just a saint
Old math equation Illustration.
Since we have been freed from the old law, we are no longer condemned in our sin. Not in anything that we have done, but through the work of Christ on the cross, and now the Spirit living inside of us. Which is the law of Spirit we see in verse 2
V. 2- Romans 8:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”
What is the law of sin and death first!
We know that the Law of the old Testament, was given to the Jews for them to set an example for what to do. They have to follow the slew of laws, then they can be right with God. But as we know, if we sin one time, we can never reach that goal of complete righteousness in ourself trying to fulfill the law.
How does someone obtain this grace of God and are freed from the law of old?
Paul answers this in verses 3-4.
V. 3-4- Key in on new covenant!!!
Romans 8: 3-4 “For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”
We know that the Law of the old Testament, was given to the Jews for them to set an example for what to do. They have to follow the slew of laws, then they can be right with God. But as we know, if we sin one time, we can never reach that goal of complete righteousness in ourself trying to fulfill the law.
So God through his perfect plan has given us the new law, which has been completed through the work of Jesus, and is brought to fruition in the Holy Spirit in a believers life. We are under the grace of God.
Romans 6:14 “For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.”
How does someone obtain the new covenant?

Gospel Presentation

God’s Design
Genesis 1:26-27 “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
Sin
The Fall, Genesis 3
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Romans 3:10 “as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;”
brokenness
Psalm 51:3 “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.”
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
gospel
John 3:16 ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
repent and believe
Romans 10:9 “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Romans 10:13 “For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.””
recover and pursue
john 1:12 “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,”
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
1 John 5:13 “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.”
Now that we know firmly how we obtain the new law through the Spirit, lets look at our next point which is
V. 5-8- The Spirit sets us apart from the flesh
Paul the transitions into a series of comparing and contrasting between the flesh and the spirit.
Romans 8:5 “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.”
Galatians 5:19-22 “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”
Romans 8:6 “For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”
Once again old and new covenant.
Romans 8:7 “For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.”
Selfishness
No glory to God. All about us.
Look at Jesus as self sacrifice.
Romans 8:8 “Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”
Sail boat analogy with dad
Living apart from the Holy Spirit is like being on a sailboat, and trying to make the boat move with me blowing on the sails.

Matthew 5:14-16 ““You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
V. 9-11- The Spirit gives us new life
Exposition
Romans 8:9 “You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”
Paul is talking to the beliver here, bringing them back in.
Romans 8:10 “But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.”
Ezekiel 37 the valley of dry bones
Ezekiel 37:5 “Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.”
Romans 8:11 “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
Eternal life starts now.
Eternal declaration
John 10 Jesus is speaking and teaching of himself being the good shepherd. The good shepherd will lay down his life for his sheep, us! And if someone is to try and snatch us from God, they can not do it. We are with the Jesus forever, once we are his sheep.
The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps us within the line of eternal salvation and seals us
2 Corinthians 1:21-22 “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”
Ephesians 1:13 “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,”
Sanctification
Sanctification can be defined as once a person is chosen by God the ongoing purification of the believer as one of God’s chosen creations[1]. Through the definition we know that sanctification is a continual process for a believer. We can investigate scripture and see the support that sanctification is an ongoing process, and it is promised to us[2]. The first scripture we can look at and see this is Romans 8. Believers do not walk and live according to the flesh, their old self, but according to the Spirit[3]. The ability for us to live according to the Spirit, comes from the Spirit living in us. The Spirit has set us free in the work of Jesus on the cross and the gospel.
Philippians 3:12-15 “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.”
We are always straining toward the gaol of salvation
