O God of life, as we have learned to do in all our experiences, we come to yo in the hour of death. We know that you love us, and that you can turn even the shadow of death into the light of the morning. Help us now to wait before you with reverent and submissive hearts. make this a time of opening our eyes and our understandings, and a time of admonition to our hearts and souls. Bless those who feel this sorrow most keenly, and cause the bonds of love to bind us closer together. May you bless this time and bring comfort to all who are here. Amen

4 “Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.
5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.
6 “Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be.
7 “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.
Today we come together and we are in pain with the realization that we lost a loved one too soon. There is no doubt that death is painful. We are reminded tonight that life is short and that life can be fleeting.
When we talk about the idea of life being fleeting we often look at that in a negative light. We see the sting of death and we want to flee from it. However, there is no denying that our lives are short.
Just because life is short does not mean that life is not valuable or full of life and hope. I remember meeting Greg and connecting with him around some of the things that I love the most.
Star Wars and other nerdy topics.
In fact as i think about it i am reminded of one time we all got together and me and greg sat an talked about Star wars for an hour or two. I remember him coming to church and noticing that i was wearing this tie and we talked about the millenium falcon for a bit. Or the fact hat he loved that I named my WIFI network the Millennium falcon.
Greg wasn’t summed up though by his love of things like Star Wars or Star Trek or some other fantasy/scifi series. The thing I remember most about Greg was his love for his Kids.
There is something special about Parents that bring in kids that aren’t their own and raise them. It takes a special kind of love to do that. Greg cared a lot about these three kids.
Even though we spent a lot of time talking nerd talk we spent more time talking about our kids. Looking for advice from each other talking about different stories that the kids gave us. As with most dad’s Greg at times had his patience tested by his kids as we all do. You could tell though that even in moments of frustration he was still a guy who loved his kids and just wanted to see the best for them.
He was taken early in life and we mourn that. The loss of a Husband, Father, and friend is never easy.
However, today we need to take comfort in knowing that God can hold us in this hour of pain.
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,
4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
God is there for our comfort and will help us through this time if we turn to him. We can seek comfort in his arms if we allow him to hold us. We can take comfort and than celebrate the man that was Greg and the big smile he brought to the lives of so many and the light heart and the deep love that he had for his family.
