And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita. And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold. And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live. And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm. Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
GOD NEVER CHANGES
INTRODUCTION:
We live in a changing world.
Customs, culture, and church members change.
God call the church to change the world, not the world to change the church.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Lets look at some things the church hasn't changed its mind about.
I. THE WORD OF GOD
A. Inspired, infallible
B. A map for direction, a manual for wisdom, caution, and warning, and a mirror for discipline.
This Book contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s character. Here paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed. Christ is its grand object; our good is its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is given you in life and will be opened in the judgment and will be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.
II. THE WAY OF GOD
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
A. Realize you are a sinner
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
B. Recognize Jesus died for you
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
D. Receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
III. THE WORSHIP OF GOD
A. Worship is to be Scriptural
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
B. Worship is to be Spiritual
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
C. Worship is to be Sacrificial
Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?
(Mary came to give, not receive.)
IV. THE WILL OF GOD—It is the will of God that:
A. All sinners to be saved
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
B. All saved be separated
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
C. All separated be Spirit-filled
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
V. THE WRATH OF GOD—Romans 1:18
A. God deals with Saints that rebel
1. Cleaning—John 15:3
2. Chastisement—Hebrews 12:8
3. Castaway—1 Cor. 9:27
But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
B. God deals with the sinners that refuse
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.
