Key Things to Remember When Speaking
Key Things to Remember When Speaking
It’s Not About You
Don’t Try to Uplift Yourself
Always Give Glory to God
Some Preachers can/will Talk All Day About Themselves
Don’t Be Like that
Paul would Occasionally Talk About Himself, But it was Never to Lift Himself Up
He Bragged on Himself in 2 Corinthians, But He Hated Every Second of it
And it was for a Very Specific Purpose
He Bragged About His Suffering and Hardships to Prove that He was Truly an Apostle and that the People Should Listen to Him
It’s Not About Your Ability
You Don’t have to Be a Good Speaker to Teach or Preach
Moses is the Perfect Example of that
Try to Be Respectful to Those Who are Listening to You
Try Your Best Not to Be Unnecessarily Offensive
If the Truth Makes Them Uncomfortable, That’s One Thing
If Your Language, Dress, Attitude, Posture Makes Them Uncomfortable, that’s Another Thing
Don’t Say or Do Things that You Know will Make People Uncomfortable Simply to Make Them Uncomfortable
If You are Going to Offend People, it Needs to Be for Scriptural Reasons and with a Heart of Gentleness and Humility
Don’t Just Throw Your Lesson Together
If Your Not Prepared, Give Yourself More Time
I’ve had to Change My Lessons Many Times Because I Wasn’t Confident in My Knowledge of a Text
Use Commentaries, Study Bibles, Whatever Resources You can Find to Help You Understand a Text
Be Open-Minded, But Not Gullible
If You Align Perfectly with Everything Someone Says, That’s Probably Not a Good Thing
No One has it All Figured Out
Don’t Trust All of Someone’s Opinions Just Because They’ve Got a Few Good Ones
Don’t Eisegete, Exegete
It’s Very Easy to have Something We Really Want to Teach/Talk About and Misuse a Text in Order to Make that Point
That’s Why Most of My Sermons are Simply Taking a Text and Working Through it
I’ve Taught So Many Things that Aren’t True to the Scriptures in the Past Because I Used Whatever Scriptures I Could Find that Seemed to Communicate My Point I Wanted to Get Across
Don’t Try to Fit Everything You Know into One Lesson
I’ve Struggled with this
When You Study Something for a Long Time, it’s Tempting to Want to Talk About Everything
Hit the Main Points
Make it as Simple as You can Without Sacrificing Truth
Make Sure to Be Encouraging (Give Courage)
Don’t Scare Them Away
Let Them Know that They are Fully Capable of Doing this
Look at Passages Where Jesus, His Apostles, and Others are Preaching/Teaching
Learn From Their Demeanor and Material
