WHEN YOU’RE PRESSURED TO CONFORM
Proverbs 17:3 NLT
3 Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the Lord tests the heart.

When you’re pressured to give in, remember...

1. BEFORE EVERY BLESSING THERE’S ALWAYS A TESTING.

1 Thessalonians 2:4 NLT
4 For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.

2. GOD TESTS US WITH STRESS BEFORE HE TRUSTS US WITH SUCCESS.

Daniel 1:5 NLT
5 The king assigned them a daily ration of food and wine from his own kitchens. They were to be trained for three years, and then they would enter the royal service.
Daniel 1:8 NLT
8 But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.
DEFILE — to pollute, contaminate, or corrupt. A loss of purity.
Daniel’s first test shows . . .

FOUR QUALITIES GOD LOOKS FOR IN YOUR LIFE...

1. INTEGRITY: HE NEVER FORGOT WHO HE WAS.

Daniel 1:8a NLT
8 But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.
Romans 12:2 NLT
2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

2. DISCIPLINE: HE CONTROLLED HIS EGO AND HIS APPETITE.

Daniel 1:8a NLT
8 But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.
Romans 6:13 NLT
13 Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.

3. COURAGE: HE WAS WILLING TO STAND ALONE.

Exodus 23:2 NLT
2 “You must not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you are called to testify in a dispute, do not be swayed by the crowd to twist justice.
1 Corinthians 16:13 NLT
13 Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.

4: HUMILITY: HE WAS TACTFUL WITH AUTHORITY.

Daniel 1:8–16 NLT
8 But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods. 9 Now God had given the chief of staff both respect and affection for Daniel. 10 But he responded, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has ordered that you eat this food and wine. If you become pale and thin compared to the other youths your age, I am afraid the king will have me beheaded.” 11 Daniel spoke with the attendant who had been appointed by the chief of staff to look after Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 12 “Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,” Daniel said. 13 “At the end of the ten days, see how we look compared to the other young men who are eating the king’s food. Then make your decision in light of what you see.” 14 The attendant agreed to Daniel’s suggestion and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his three friends looked healthier and better nourished than the young men who had been eating the food assigned by the king. 16 So after that, the attendant fed them only vegetables instead of the food and wine provided for the others.
Daniel 1:18–19 NLT
18 When the training period ordered by the king was completed, the chief of staff brought all the young men to King Nebuchadnezzar. 19 The king talked with them, and no one impressed him as much as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the royal service.
How to make a case to an authority...
Develop a reputation for being responsible.
Be humble, not belligerent.
Don’t be deceptive or manipulate.
Appeal their goals and interests.
Choose the right time, place and words.
Trust God—even if they reject your appeal.

What gave Daniel the courage to stand alone?

2 Corinthians 6:14–7:1 NLT
14 Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? 16 And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 17 Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. 18 And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” 1 Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.
