Is there a Sower in the House?

Matthew 13:1-23

A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. Jesus would tell a very common story – something the hearer would relate to, yet it contained a much deeper truth. And a mystery is a hidden truth – something human wisdom can’t grasp. It must be revealed. Jesus said to His disciples, “Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus taught this way to enlighten (Matthew 13:11-12), and to conceal (Matthew 13:13-14).

Now, if you’re saved and you take seriously the Great Commission and your assignment to share the Gospel and in the anointing of the Holy Spirit to help you, there are three things that make the gospel effective to do its work. It is my prayer that God will raise up some sowers in this house.

I. A Word Fitly Spoken:

a. (Proverbs 25:11) Matthew 13:3, “And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow.” They were a farming culture, and a man is sowing seed. He’s a sower. They understood that. But there’s a deeper meaning. Jesus said Matthew 13:19, “When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not.” The seed is “the word of the kingdom.” And every one of us has been called to be a seed sower. The seed is the Word of God, and like this farmer and every farmer, if they want a harvest, must sow seed. Is there a sower in the house?

II. A Faithful Witness:

a. (Proverbs 14:5) Jesus said a sower went forth to sow. Who is the sower? Jesus (Matthew 13:37). He has sown the seed of His Word in this world. But He is not the only one sows (John 20:21). What’s your job? It’s to do what Jesus did. His assignment has become ours. Your assignment is to sow the seed of the Word like Jesus did. What would happen this week if everyone here became seed-sowers? (Psalm 126:6). You’ll never be closer to the heart of God than when you’re sharing the Gospel with an unsaved person.

b. “He that goeth forth and weepeth …” Seeds need water. We water this seed with our tears. That’ll cause it to sprout: a broken heart in soul winning. God takes notice of our tears. “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed …” The seed is the Word of God. And if you want an abundant harvest, you need to sow the seed abundantly. He “shall doubtless come again”—“doubtless come again!”—“with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him!” Don’t worry about the ground, just keep sowing! Is there a sower in the house?

III. Sow, Sow, Sow!:

a. (Ecclesiastes 11:4) If you wait for the perfect conditions, you will never get anything done. Jesus mentions four kinds of soil. He mentions the stubborn (Matthew 13:4, 19), the shallow (Matthew 13:5-6, 20-21), the selfish (Matthew 13:7, 22), and the receptive (Matthew 13:8-9,23) Aren’t you glad Jesus didn’t stop sowing because of bad ground? Are you receptive? Is your heart good ground?

b. There is nothing wrong with the seed, nor the sower, but with the soil. So, there must be a word fitly spoken, a faithful witness, and a sower that won’t quit. Is there a sower in the house of the Lord today?
