Why Spiritual Weight Loss?

Beset - a competitor thwarting a racer in every direction.
Our competitor can be sin, Satan, or self.
Sin - But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, And your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. (Isaiah 59:2)
Satan - (1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” )
Self - (James 1:13-16 “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.” )
In this instance to beset means that sin, Satan, self will skillfully surrounds us to prevent us from running.

Weigh In

Weight - Only time the Greek word is used here.
1. Whatever is Prominent
- Those things which we put first. Those things which are significant.
( Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness)
(That in all things He might have the preeminence)
(Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” )
2. Whatever is Protuberant
Something that is thrusting out from a surrounding surface as a mass. Those things which cause sickness, and you can see.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness:

According unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

2  Wash me throughly from mine iniquity,

And cleanse me from my sin.

3  For I acknowledge my transgressions:

And my sin is ever before me.

4  Against thee, thee only, have I sinned,

David could acknowledge his sin, because he obviously realized it was there.
You would go to the doctor if you seen something on your body that might think would make you sick. Why not go the great Physician when you know there is sin in your life.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

3. Whatever is a Problem
- a burden or an obstacle.
Something that might not necessarily be called a sin in the Word of God, but hinders our walk with Christ.

If something has you, that means Christ doesn’t have all of you.

Weight Loss

Lay Aside (Shed)

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

4 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God

Create in me a clean heart, O God;

And renew a right spirit within me.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Jonah and the whale!
2. Run (Steadfastness)
To spend one’s strength in performing or attaining something. To exert one’s self, to strive hard.
Running the Christian race is hard, but it’s worth it!

13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I npress toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

3. Look to Jesus (Sight)
We should focus on Jesus!
Don’t look on the world, don’t look at self, don’t look at others, LOOK AT JESUS!!!!
4. Who for the joy set before Him endured the cross (Submission)
The world will tell you there is no joy in serving Jesus. You’ll have more joy when you are surrendered to the will of God.

But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in ufashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Submission is an act of faith!
5. Consider Him (Study)
The Savior

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are shonest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

The Scriptures

7  The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul:

The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

8  The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart:

The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9  The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever:

The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

10  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold:

Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Supplications

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Pray without Ceasing
Men ought always to pray and not to faint.
