(SUNDAY SERMON) JOHN: “THE WORD OF LIFE”

Questions: “Who is Jesus? Why does it matter to me?”

Truth to Swallow: JESUS IS GOD’S ONLY PLAN FOR MAN, AND FOR ME.

John 1:1-18

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. 16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

John 14:6 (NKJV)

6  Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

L.I.F.E. , is the primary theme of the Gospel of John. There are 47 different references to Jesus using this word in His teaching. Some examples are:

Eternal Life- 3:16

Abundant Life- 10:10

The Bread of Life- 6:33

The Water of Life- 7:37-38

The Life that is the Light of men- 1:4

I AM, THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE"- 14:6

HE IS THE GREAT "I AM", a term used to describe God, in the Old Testament, to assure the people of Israel that He was indeed the Only True God, the

God of their Fathers.

Exodus 3:4-6 (KJV)

6  Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

Exodus 3:13-14 (KJV)

13  And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?

14  And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Jesus makes 7 statements in the Gospel of John, beginning with "I AM":

I AM the Bread of Life-6:48

I AM the Light of the World- 8:12

I AM the Door of the Sheep- 10:7

I AM the Good Sheperd - 10:11

I AM the Resurrection and the Life- 11:25

I AM the WAY-14:6

I AM the True Vine- 15:1

Jesus, is plainly presented as THE SON OF GOD, DEITY,John 1:1-3

Now lets, break down the first 5 verses a little, and begin to unwrapped

the Greatest Gift from God to everyone,

Jesus Christ!

I. "I am THE WORD."(1-3)

Jesus is not merely a word from God, he is THE WORD, THE ONLY WORD, HE IS THE EXPRESS IMAGE OF GOD!

Hebrews 1:1-2 (KJV)

1  God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

2  Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Genesis 1:1-3 (KJV) in

1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3  And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Reread John 1:1-3 again!

He(Jesus) was in the beginning!

He(Jesus) was God's Word!

He (Jesus) was with God!

He (Jesus)WAS GOD!

He (Jesus) was the Creator!(verse 3)

Colossians 1:9-20 (KJV)

9  For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

10  That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11  Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

12  Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13  Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14  In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

15  Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

16  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

18  And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

19  For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

20  And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Notice that in verse 16, the scripture says that HE, JESUS, CREATED EVERYTHING.

So, how was the earth created. Well, lets read Gen 1:1-3

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

II .  I AM LIFE. (4)

"IN HIM WAS LIFE"

John 14:6 (KJV)

6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me

-He is Eternal Life,

1 John 5:11-13 (KJV)

11  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

12  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

13  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

John 10:9-10 (KJV)

9  I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

10  The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly

John 7:37-38 (NKJV)

37  On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.

38  He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."

- He is Abundant Life

John 6:30-35 (NKJV)

30  Therefore they said to Him, "What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do?

33  For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

34  Then they said to Him, "Lord, give us this bread always."

35  And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

- He is Provisional and Sustaining Life

John 4:6-15 (NKJV)

6  Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

7  A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."

13  Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,

14  but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."

-HE IS THE LIVING WATER OF LIFE

-HE IS (WAS) , THE LIFE OF MEN. HE IS AND WAS THE CREATOR OF ALL LIFE

I. I AM THE LIGHT.

We just celebrated Christmas, the birthday of Christ. I want you to look back at the record of His birth in Luke chapter two, and pay close attention to something, that you, may have not seen before.

Luke 2:1-14 (NKJV)

9  And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.

10  Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.

14  "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"

Matthew 1:20-25 (NKJV)

21  And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."

22  So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:

23  "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."

Matthew 2:1-2 (NKJV)

1  Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,

2  saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him."

NOW, based on what we have just read,  WHAT EXACTLY WAS THE STAR?

It is and was the "Shekinah" Glory of God

IT WAS "THE LIGHT" FROM HEAVEN!

IT WAS THE "GLORY OF GOD"!

IT WAS THE "PRESENCE" OF GOD, ON THIS EARTH!

THE OLD TESTAMENT CALLED THIS STAR, THE LIGHT, THE "SHEKINAH" GLORY OF GOD.

The temple was in Jerusalem, and was regarded as the habitation, or dwelling-place, of the God of Israel. Particularly, the most holy place of the temple was deemed the place of his sacred abode. The Shekinah—from [˜shaakan)<h7931>, to dwell—the visible symbol of his presence, rested on the cover of the ark, and from this place he was accustomed to commune with his people, and to give responses to their requests. Hence, ‘to appear before God,’ Hebrew ‘to be seen before my face,’

Moses could not face the LIGHT OF GOD, HIS SHEKINAH GLORY DIRECTLY

Exodus 33:13-23 (NKJV)

13  Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people."

14  And He said, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."

15  Then he said to Him, "If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.

16  For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth."

17  So the LORD said to Moses, "I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name."

18  And he said, "Please, show me Your glory."

19  Then He said, "I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion."

20  But He said, "You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live."

21  And the LORD said, "Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock.

22  So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by.

23  Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen."

(Jesus is THE ROCK, BY WHOM WE CAN SEE THE PRESENCE OF GOD, WHO COVERS OUR SIN, AND MAKES US PRESENTABLE TO THE GLORY OF GOD)

The children of Israel were to follow the light(the pillar of fire) in the darkness, in the wilderness.

Exodus 13:21-22 (NKJV)

21  And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.

22  He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.

The tabernacle was built to House the Light, THE SHEKINAH, (glory) of God.

Exodus 40:34-38 (NKJV)

34  Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

35  And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

36  Whenever the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle, the children of Israel would go onward in all their journeys.

37  But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not journey till the day that it was taken up.

38  For the cloud of the LORD was above the tabernacle by day, and fire was over it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys

The Application-Invitation

I. You have heard THE WORD of God, do you know the WORD?(JESUS)

II. Do you have the LIFE(Eternal and Abundant) of God within you?

III. Have you seen the LIGHT OF GOD, (JESUS), THE GLORY OF GOD IN YOUR LIFE, AND DOES HIS LIGHT(GLORY AND PRESENCE) LIVE IN YOUR TABERNACLE(BODY, SOUL AND SPIRIT) ?

IF NOT, THEN WHY NOT?

DO YOU HAVE L.I.F.E?

I. "I" know "I" am Saved, do YOU (I JOHN5:13)

F. aith is what it will take to RECEIVE LIFE!

E. ternity is awaiting YOUR DECISION!

Now, go to your phone, and type in “light at conception” on your Google search. Science has just now figured out the Jesus is the “LIFE that LIGHTS every man , woman, boy and girl, that comes into the world. “ John 1: 4, and verse 9.
