THE RESURRECTION DAYS (Matt. 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20, 21)
1. On what day did Jesus rise? On Sunday morning of passover week; our Easter Sunday.
2. Who came early to the tomb, and why? The women among the closest disciples; to prepare his body with spices for final burial.
3. What does this prove as to the expectation of the disciples? It proves conclusively that they did not expect that Jesus would rise again.
4. What did the women find? The stone of the tomb rolled away, the sepulchre empty, and an angel who told them that Jesus had risen from the dead.
5. How many times and for how long did Jesus appear to his disciples after his resurrection? Eleven times during forty days.
6. Give them in their order.
(1) To Mary Magdalene on the morning of the resurrection, Sunday, April 9, A.D. 30. John 20:11–18.
(2) To the women returning from the sepulchre, Sunday morning, April 9. Matt. 28:9, 10.
(3) To Peter alone, Sunday, April 9. Luke 24:34.
(4) To two disciples on the way to Emmaus, Sunday evening, April 9. Luke 24:13–31.
(5) To the ten apostles, Thomas being absent, Sunday evening, April 9. John 20:19–25.
(6) To the eleven apostles. Thomas being present, Sunday evening, April 16. John 20:26–29.
(7) To seven apostles fishing in the Sea of Galilee. The last of April or early in May. John 21:1–24. (It was at this time that Peter was restored to his apostleship.)
(8) To the eleven apostles on a mountain in Galilee. Early in May. Matt. 28:16–20.
(9) To more than five hundred brethren at once. Early in May. 1 Cor. 15:6.
(10) To James alone. May. 1 Cor. 15:7.
(11) To the eleven apostles at his ascension from the Mount of Olives, on Thursday, May 18, A.D. 30. Luke 24:50, 51; Acts 1:1–11.
7. Did Jesus even appear again to men? Yes to Paul at his conversion (Acts 9:1–7; 1 Cor. 15:8); and to John the apostle (Rev. 1:13–20).
8. What is proved by these appearances? That we worship a living, omnipresent Saviour, who is able and willing to conquer death.
Bible passages involving the resurrection:
12:2 This is the first reference in the Bible to the physical resurrection of the righteous and the wicked (see Isa 26:19 for a reference to the resurrection of the righteous). The NT’s description of heaven and hell expands and deepens this teaching on the afterlife (see John 5:24–29).
No man has made much progress in the school of Christ who does not look forward with joy to the day of death and final resurrection.
