INTRODUCTION: What have you done for me lately?
Hebrews 5:1 ESV
1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
Every high priest - There was always supposed to be one high priest.
chosen - Descendant of Aaron without defect.
ILLUSTRATION - walk around and try to pick a representative from among the people in the service. How silly would it be to go outside to pick out repressive for you.
act on behalf of men in relation to God - They were the mediator.
Catholics - have priests. But we see that we don’t need them anymore because through Christ He is our High Priest. We can go to Him.
To offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. - This was how they related to God. Offer sacrifices. This is how Jesus did as well.
We were not even clean enough to approach Jesus on behalf.

Jesus pleases God on our behalf, so draw close to Him.

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
Last week we talked about the sacrifices that he made. But did you know that he is still in that role of high priest.
Whenever you need help, or do something dumb he goes before the father. He has the father’s ear.
Hebrews 5:2 ESV
2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.
can deal gently - same word as previously that God can sympathize without weaknesses. Measured response. (HAHA illustration, good cop bad cop)
ignorant and wayward - That’s you and me. Ignorant is where we get the word agnostic. Means you don’t know. Wayward means backslidden.

Jesus is kind in our weakness, so stop hiding from Him.

Hebrews 5:3 ESV
3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.
obligated - he must do this.
offer sacrifices for his own sins - Before He could go in and sacrifice for other peoples sin he had to do if for himself.
Hebrews 5:4 ESV
4 And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
No one takes this honor for himself - He couldn’t appoint himself. Even today, Pastors are called by God, only recognized by men.
Hebrews 5:5 ESV
5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;
Christ did not exalt himself - in the same way Christ did not exalt himself.
Uzzaih story -

Jesus is King over us, so obey Him.

Hebrews 5:6 ESV
6 as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”
They would have known that the high priest needed to be a descendant of Aaron. You cannot be a priest and King.
Unless, He said he was from a different line.
Melchizedek - King of Righteousness. From Salem, peace or Jerusalem.
CONCLUSION: Chiasm from last week.
