The Goal of Creation / Eden

God’s good garden was made for one reason...
Why did God even make the world and all that is in it?
The ultimate goal of creation is for humanity to dwell with God. - Michael Morales
We’ll see that God ultimately gets what he wants in the end. He didn’t abandon his plan.
In fact we make this bold claim on the back of the book that...
Ultimately, the mighty and wondrous deeds of God found in the Bible are all done for one reason…
So He could dwell with us, and we with Him.
Always and forever, world without end.

לְעֹלָ֥ם וָעֶֽד

“World Without End”
He have a name for spaces where gods dwell in the midst of humans: Temples
Indeed we will see the deep connections between The Tabernacle/Temple and Eden in just a moment, but

Babel (Babylon)

Antithesis of God’s design
Rising into heaven to make their name great. A rival mountain to the mountain of God.
The City of God and the Goal of Creation Conclusion > Chapter 1: The Godless City

Genesis 1–2 introduces a story that anticipates the creation of an extraordinary city where God will dwell in harmony with humanity. Against this background, it is noteworthy that the last episode in the primeval era (Genesis 1–11) concerns the construction of a city. This metropolis, however, is the antithesis of what God desires. In the light of this, the rest of Genesis starts a process that will result in the creation of an alternative city where God will dwell on earth in harmony with people.

Abraham

The means by which Genesis 1-11 will be reversed (5 fold curse/blessing). “Great name”
Vision of a new city. Huge amount of descendants that will live in the blessing of God’s presence.

For he was expecting the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Tabernacle

Cosmogonic Pattern

And I will dwell in the midst of the ⌊Israelites⌋,q and I will be their God. 46 And they will know that I am Yahweh, their God, who brought them out from the land of Egypt in order to dwell in their midst. I am Yahweh their God.

And I will put my dwelling place in your midst, and my inner selfo shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk about in your midst, and I shall be your God,p and you shall be my people.

Temple

Zion as the mountain of God. Psalm 99:9
Psalm 99:9 LEB
Exalt Yahweh our God, and worship at his holy mountain, for Yahweh our God is holy.
Glory descends 1 Kings like in Exod 40
Then I will argue that the Garden of Eden was the first archetypal temple, and that it was the model for all subsequent temples. - Beale
The cosmos was understood as a large temple and the temple as a small cosmos - Morales
the Old Testament tabernacle and temples were symbolic microcosms of the whole creation. - Beale

Exile (Babylon)

Adam and Israel have the same story, and end up in the same place…away from God’s presence.
God’s glorious presence leaves the Temple…and doesn’t return to the “second temple”

And the glory of Yahweh went out fromi the threshold of the temple, and it stood above the cherubim. 19 And the cherubim lifted up their wings, and they rose from the earth before my eyes. At their going out, the wheels werej beside them. And he stood at the doorway of the eastern gate of the templek of Yahweh, and the glory of the God of Israel ⌊was over them⌋

Immanuel

Jesus “tabernacles” among us - same word as tabernacle in the greek. Skeenee.
Beholding his glory (like the glory in the tabernacle).

Pentecost / Holy Spirit / Church

Reversal of Babel.

2 And when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in the same place. 2 And suddenly a sound like a violent rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And divideda tongues like fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languagesb as the Spirit gave them ability to speak out.

5 Now there were Jews residing in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And when* this sound occurred, the crowd gathered and was in confusion, because each one was hearing them speaking in his own language. 7 And they were astounded and astonished, saying, “Behold, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how do we hear, each one of us, in ⌊our own native language⌋?c 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and those residing in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,d 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya toward Cyrene, and the Romans who were in town, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own languages the great deeds of God!” 12 And all were amazed and greatly perplexed, saying ⌊to one another⌋,e “⌊What can this mean?⌋”f 13 But others jeered and* said, “They are full of sweet new wine!”

The nations are represented. Language barriers are overcome. God is gathering the nations into his presence through his Spirit. Abrahamic Covenant (Gen 12).
The Church is a temple. Glory falling for the first time since 1 Kings 8.

The Holy City

Where it was all going in the first place. Revelation 21 and 22 have significant connections to Gen 1 and 2.
Mountain of God. Tree of Life. God’s presence with his people.

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

“Behold, the dwelling of God is with humanity,

and he will take up residence with them,

and they will be his people

and God himself will be with them.a

This is the hope of the story of the Bible: God's domain and our domain will one day completely unite. All things will be made new. Death will be replaced with life. The whole earth will be a recreation of the garden, and the glory of the temple will fill the whole earth. Every nation will be blessed through the power of the resurrected Jesus, and God's own personal presence will permeate every square inch of the new creation. - Tim Mackie
