Introduction

Well good evening family, as you can tell Pastor Clark is not in today.
He and Sally are celebrating their 40 year anniversary.
yeah, 40 years of being married, that’s a long time.
I’m praying that I can even live that long, let alone be married for 40 years.
With all sincerity, they say they miss you all and they will return soon. Lord willing.
And for those of you who don’t know me my name is Anthony and I am one of the Pastors here.
I have the privilege of serving the High School ministry here at the barn.
Well, without further a due, let’s get into our study for today.
If you have your bible turn w/ to the book of Romans, Romans ch. 5.

Review & Overview

1. Chapters 1 - 4 Review

Now, Chps. 1-11 deals w/ 4 doctrinal principles or 4 fundamental Christian Truths that all Christians should know.
Chapter 1 to the first half of chapter 3 Paul talks about God’s Condemnation or God’s Wrath.
But then he transitions to God’s Justification or the Revelation of God’s Righteousness there at the end of Ch. 3.
Romans 3:21 NKJV
21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
So Chapters 3 through 5 deal with the Revelation of God’s Righteousness.
In Chp. 4 Paul proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are made righteous by faith & he gave us several Old Testament Examples:
Abraham - He simply believed & was made righteous
King David - Though he sinned, still knew He was righteous
Circumcision - Is not needed to be Righteous
The Law - Was not intended to make us Righteous

2. Current Study’s Overview

Now here in Chp. 5 Paul points out the byproduct or the results of being Justified by Faith or made Righteous by Faith.
And there are several things that Paul lists as it pertains to the byproduct of being Justified by God.
But today we are only going to go over 1 verse regarding 1 domino effect of being Justified
Which is...
Look at Vs. 1...

1. We Have Peace With God Vs. 1

1.1 Therefore Vs. 1a

The word “Therefore” obviously, connects the previous section in chp. 4 where Paul proves we’re justified by faith.
The word justified is a verb that is in the passive voice.
so it’s an action we receive, not an action we accomplish.
And before we move forward, I’d like to formulate that thought.
Because there isn’t anything we can do in our own strength to be Justified. It is a work of God.
In addition, being justified is different from being forgiven.
look, all our sins are forgiven by the work of Jesus Christ. Can I get an Amen, or a hallelujah, or one of these things?
But we are also Justified...
I think the simplest explanation of what justified means, is seen in the word itself.
Just-If-I’d never sinned. The work of Jesus Christ not only forgives us of our sins but also Justifies us.
ILLUSTRATION: Look at the life of a convicted felon.
A person commits a felony and he goes to prison and when he does the time he is freed and let out of prison.
The problem is, when he begins to apply for jobs, and places to live.
What do the managers and land lords say?
I don’t want an ex felon to live on my property, I don’t want to work with an ex felon.
You see, he still has the stain of his sin even though he did the time.
APPLICATION: The difference for us Christians is that.
Not only did Jesus pay the price for our sins, hence we are forgiven.
But we are also justified, we don’t have the stain of sin positionally in the eyes of God.
So what Paul is saying here at the beginning of Vs. 1 is that we are justified by faith in God, therefore...
Look at the middle of Vs. 1

1.2 Peace With God Vs. 1b

Now, this is interesting because this word “with” in the greek is typically “para” which means to come along side someone or something.
However, the word “with” here is...
With Greek - The Word Pros - Which means to come towards something or someone.
This word is used to indicate movement or position toward a person or thing.
So this part of the verse could be translated to, “we have peace towards God”. (Pause)
In other words, what Paul is saying, because we have been justified or have been made righteous.
Now, there is peace between us and God.
We can now approach God and go towards God because there is peace between us and God.
Can I get an amen or a hallelujah or one of these things???
And what’s compelling about this, is that the text is insinuating that there was a point where we were not at peace with God.
In fact, drop down and look at Vs. 10...
Romans 5:10 - we were enemies of God
Understand, without Jesus Christ, humanity cannot be at peace with God.
2 Corinthians 5:19 NKJV
19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
1 Timothy 2:5 NKJV
5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
John 14:6 NKJV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Acts 4:12 NKJV
12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Listen, Jesus is our peace Ephesians 2:4...
APPLICATION: And this is critical to understand because many today think that if they hold a non-partisan view regarding Jesus. They think they are fine.
Listen, there’s no neutrality with God, there is no middle ground in Christianity.
Matthew 12:30 - If you are not with me you are against me
APPLICATION: Plainly put, if your here today and have not genuinely received Jesus Christ as your Lord, God, and Savior.
You are not at peace with God, but an enemy of God.
Likewise, maybe your here today, and you profess Jesus as your Lord but your lifestyle says different.
You are not at peace with God, but an enemy of God.
APPLICATION: If that is you today, it’s time to make it right with the Lord.
It’s time to come to terms and be at peace with God. (Pause)
Now that is a good pivot point for all of us.
Because if you look closely, you’ll see the source of our peace with God.
And it should also bring us hope...
Look at the end of Vs. 1

1.3 Through Our Lord Vs. 1c

It is through our Lord Jesus Christ. It’s through His death, burial, & resurrection that we can have peace with God.
Romans 4:25 NKJV
25 who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.
Now this is important because, once we make Peace w/ God, we then have the peace of God. (Pause)
John 14:27 NKJV
27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Look, the peace that the world offers cannot be compared to the peace that Jesus can give you.
Worldly peace is based on external circumstances!
Worldly peace is fragile and can be broken by any life event!
But the peace that Jesus gives, is not dependent on external circumstances.
It’s a peace that is rooted in a relationship with Him and His promise of eternal life.
And when we understand that, we understand...
Philippians 4:7 NKJV
7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
This speaks of that inner peace & rest...
Matthew 11:28 NKJV
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
APPLICATION: No matter what we’re going through or dealing with we have the peace of God in our lives.
ILLUSTRATION: Imagine yourselves being on a ship that is being tossed on crashing waves. There is a storm raging and winds are howling.
The crew is scared, because they are unsure if they’ll make it through the night.
But the captain remains steady, and he calls for the anchor to be lowered.
As the anchor it hits the bottom and digs in, the ship is stilled.
There in the middle of the storm the ship is steadfast.
Just like the anchor, the peace of God can anchor us in the storms of life. When we feel tossed about by fear, anxiety, and tribulations of life, His peace brings us stability and calm.

2. And as the men come forward and the worship team comes back up.

And begin to distribute the bread and the cup.
I ask that we all hold the elements so that we can partake together.
and make sure you grab both cups, the bread is under the juice.
And lets spend some time just going before the Lord with all humility.
Maybe there are some areas in our lives that we need to deal with?
Maybe that we’re struggling with.
Let’s take some time to just cry out to the Lord and ask for his help and healing.
(Go Sit Down)

3. Communion The Bread

As we come and gather together it is a time for us to remember all that Christ has done for us.
Through His sacrifice he made on the cross and His bloodshed.
as we have the bread the bread represents the body of our Lord.
he willingly & selflessly gave Himself on calvary’s cross
1 Corinthians 11:24 NKJV
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Let’s partake.
Pray. About stepping into time from eternity and taking on flesh. and gave His body for us.
Before we partake of the cup. Let us take a moment and be intentional as the worship team plays another song. Let’s spend some time worshipping the Lord...

4. Communion The Cup

Just as the bread represents the body of our Lord so too the cup represents His blood.
now, the blood that Jesus spilled is a picture of God’s love for us. It demonstrates His love for us.
Romans 5:8 NKJV
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 4:10 NKJV
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
1 Corinthians 11:25–26 NKJV
25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
Pray
Talk about worship experience. Be open to how God wants to speak.
sit down stand, pray for one another, ask the person next to you to pray over you.
Make peace w/ God.
