Background

before we get to the scripture a little background
the reputation of Jesus is spreading
large crowds are gathering
story of Jairus
Mark 5:24–34 NASB95
24 And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him. 25 A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse— 27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. 28 For she thought, “If I just touch His garments, I will get well.” 29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?” 31 And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ” 32 And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.”

The People

let’s start by looking at the people and their affect
Mark 5:24 NASB95
24 And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.
there are lots of people around Jesus, Large crowd, hard to get to him
and people sometimes become obstacles to getting to Jesus
some who are seeking Jesus, like her
many are there out of curiosity
some hoping to see a show
some following what’s popular
then you have his disciples around him, who mean well, but sometimes get in the way - like the time when they tried to stop kids from getting to Jesus
you see the same thing in modern church service - problem is that it can be confusing because it’s hard to tell who’s who at first glance
some who are seeking Jesus - good
many are there out of curiosity - not sure if they believe or not
some hoping to see a show - come to church for entertainment (some pastors are pressured into going over the top with their demonstrations to impress
some following what’s popular - it’s popular to be spiritual, and “believe” in Jesus (quotation marks)
then you have his disciples around him, who mean well, but sometimes get in the way - true Christians who try to guard the church from all the craziness, and sometimes take it too far
and when you are trying to connect with Jesus, it can be hard to navigate all that, frustrating
Just look at Christmas - all kinds of people participate, but not a lot of it is centered on Christ anymore
Christmas should be a time of baptisms, re-dedications, repentance, prayer
but we don’t see much of that because Jesus is lost in the crowd
and she is not important or influential like Jairus, the local religious leader
Jairus probably had help in getting to Jesus, people helping him to push through the crowd, and people making way for him once they recognized who he was.
and despite the crowd, Jairus was able to come up and have a conversation with Jesus (not mad at him, he humbled himself, fell at Jesus’ feet and begged)
in fact, I am a type of Jairus, I am a religious leader too
I had help in meeting Jesus
parents who taught me right, and lived what they taught
warned me about the pitfalls of religion
I had help making through the crowd to meet Jesus, and like him, I humbled myself before him, and asked for his help
DON’T LET PEOPLE/THE CROWD STOP YOU FROM CONNECTING WITH JESUS!

The Problems

Mark 5:25–26 NASB95
25 A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse—
She is sick
feminine bleeding that will not stop . . . at 12 years no
sick for a long time and can’t get well
definitely weakness in her body
tried every option, and not only did they NOT work, but she suffered through them
and to top it off, things had only gotten worse . . . weaker
AND that issue has caused another issue, she is broke
The problem is bad enough, but what makes it worse is that her problem is personal
menstrual cycle problems are not quite personal
on top of that, in the Jewish community you were considered ceremonially and socially unclean
no one wanted you to touch them or their clothes
it’s a problem that brings some shame
people probably won’t react well if they know her problem
this unnamed woman has had a lengthy sickness, weak, broke, ashamed, and needs to social distance herself from others . . . Yet, she needs to reach Jesus who is in a crowd of people . . .
she’s in a bad place . . . problems on top of problems . . . . but all the more reason to get to Jesus
What are your problems on top of problems? What is your issue?
dealing with it for a long time
run out of options
your strength is almost gone
hard as you have tried to solve it, things have only gotten worse
people are not only not helping, but hurting the situation
and you don’t want to share it because people might not react well
that issue has caused other issues . . . affecting other areas of life
and you find yourself in a bad place . . . but all the more reason to get to Jesus
Commercial: one comforting fact is that everybody needs Jesus! You do know that everybody needs Jesus?
raised in the church, raised outside the church
good parents, bad parents
happy childhood, sad childhood
married, single
rich, poor
black, white
citizen, immigrant
old, young . . . we all need Jesus
you’ve got something in common with everyone in here . . . you need Jesus, and they do too
tell somebody, “I need Jesus too!”
and if we could remember that, we can help each other get to Jesus
i’ll pray for you, and you pray for me
I’ll encourage you, and you will encourage me
when you’re in need I’ll support you, and you support me
we all need Jesus
So despite the people, and the problems on top of problems, this unnamed woman comes up with a plan

The Plan

we all have plans but every plan is not a good plan
Mark 5:27–28 NASB95
27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. 28 For she thought, “If I just touch His garments, I will get well.”
She heard about Jesus . . . How many of you have heard about Jesus
Isaiah says he is wonderful, counsellor . . . .
John the Baptist says he is the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world
Peter says that he is the Christ, the son of the living God
John the Revelator reveals that Jesus is alpha and omega
Rance Allen says he is a Miracle Worker
Fred Hammond says, “late in the midnight hour, God’s gonna turn it arround
I can testify that he is a waymaker
have you heard about Jesus???
if you have, you are halfway there . . .
but you can’t stop with just hearing about Jesus
that’s what many of us do . . . we know all about him, but stop short of making a connection with Jesus
in the church building, but not in the church
in praise service, but not praising
hearing a word, but not getting a word
we are at the table but not eating, but you have to “taste and see that the Lord is good”
you’ve got to dive in to this Christian thing
my wife and I were talking about how people love to say, “I didn’t get anything from church” . . . but often people are not receiving what is being given
because you have closed off your spirit and your mind, come in with the wrong attitude
but this woman did not just stop at hearing about Jesus, she wants to connect with Jesus . . so she comes up with a plan
I don’t have any connections among his disciples in order to set up a meet
I can’t make it to the front of the line like Jairus, I’m not important enough
I don’t dare cry out his name like he beggars did on the side of the road (because she is not even supposed to be there among a crowd
so what I will do is come up in the crowd BEHIND him and touch his cloak, get my healing, and slip away (and no one will be the wiser)
for she thought, “If I just touch his garments, I will get well”
she heard enough about Jesus to realize that it doesn’t take much of Jesus to change things.
When someone has real authority and power it doesn’t take much from them to change things
I admit, I like Gangster movies like the Godfather
my favorite part is that the Godfather, the head of the criminal family doesn’t have to do much or say much to change things
just a mention of their name changes everyone’s attitude, “I’ll tell Don Corleone that you said no”
or if the Godfather just gives a slight not, the henchmen know what to do (money or kill you)
or a couple of words means that things are about to go down, “that’s disappointing”
a simple phrase means everything is handled, “I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse”
when you have authority and power it doesn’t take much
I know someone who has more power than a Godfather, a Heavenly Father . . .and it doesn’t take much from him to change everything
just a mention of his son’s name can change everything
just a nod of his head can send holy angels with help
so much power that he created the world with just a few words and phrases
when you have all authority and power it doesn’t take much, so all we need to do is connect with him
quit thinking, if I do this and that, and follow up with that and this . . then God can move
if I stop every wrong thought, word, or deed . . . . if I’m perfect . . . then God can move
if I don’t make any bad decisions . . . then God will move
if I pay my tithes all year . . . then God will move
do the best you can in all areas of your life, but realize like this lady, that God has so much power and authority, that all you need is a connection
your healing, your miracle, your way out may be in that simple idea that God has put in your heart
it may be as simple as not giving up
it may be as easy as not worrying and letting go
it may be as uncomplicated of simply taking the next step that is before you
with Jesus you only need a touch!
and by faith, she reasoned that this man has so much authority and power, if I just touch his garments, I will get well

The Power

Mark 5:29 NASB95
29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
immediately she was healed, and she could feel it . . . she knew she was healed
Don’t forget that God was power, wonderworking power
don’t forget that God is able, able to exceedingly abundantly above
don’t forget that God has authority, all authority in heaven an earth
don’t forget that not only are people and angels and demons subject to him
even things are subject to him
the disciples can testify that even the winds and the waves obey him!
if you have forgotten, let me remind you right now that God has power!!!
. . .So she has her healing, and is about to slip away

The Praise

Mark 5:30–31 NASB95
30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?” 31 And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”
and Jesus also felt that power had gone out from him, so he asked who touched my garments
disciples respond that everybody is touching you, why would you as such a crazy question.?
but it’s a good question, because still today, a lot of people are around Jesus, but not many are connecting with him
Mark 5:32–33 NASB95
32 And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.
Jesus ignored them and kept looking for the woman
and the woman
knowing that she shouldn’t have even been in the crowd in the first place
maybe feeling she had stolen a miracle, came before him fearing and trembling . . . and confessed
she shared her testimony . . . she gives him the praise
some of you have touched Jesus, and his power changed things for you . . . but you are trying to slip away . . . you need to recognize the one who blessed you
humble yourself, be transparent, and tell people, God did it
Psalm 50:15 NASB95
15 Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me.”
it’s expected that you will honor God . . . HE deserves it, and someone needs to hear your testimony

The Principle

Mark 5:34 NASB95
34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.”
he called her daughter, term of endearment . . . . you didn’t sneak in and steal a blessing,
your faith opened the door wide open to your healing
the principle that God requires faith, that faith pleases God, that without faith it is impossible to please God is still there
it’s funny how often Christians forget that we walk by faith
whatever you are dealing with, it’s gonna take faith
people making it difficult . . . faith
those problems on top of problems . . . faith
whatever the plan is to connect with JEsus, make sure that it is faith based
There is a way out for you
there is a deliverance for you
there is strength for you
there is healing for you
there is a miracle for you
HAVE FAITH IN GOD
