Jesus is heading towards crucification. And going back to His Father.
So He’s telling His disciples about future persecutions.
1 “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble.
stumble means to go astray or fall away .
Also it could mean to cease believing.
“The greatest danger we have as believers today is not death but apostasy.”
The greatest reason people are falling away is because they are not being taught.
1 Jn 2:19 “19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.”
2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.
1. They will throw you our of the synagogues. vs 2
The persuction already started with the man born blind John 9:22 “22 His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.”
John 9:34 “34 They answered and said to him, “You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?” And they cast him out.”
John 12:42 “42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue;”
Luke 6:22 “22 Blessed are you when men hate you, And when they exclude you, And revile you, and cast out your name as evil, For the Son of Man’s sake.”
1 Cor 4:12 “12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure;”
1 Cor 4:13 “13 being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.”
Even in AD 85-90
All pious Jews would recite the liturgical Eighteen Benedictions three times a day. The twelfth was written by Samuel the small. Who was completely against Christ and His followers .
‘For the renegades let there be no hope, and may the arrogant kingdom soon be rooted out in our days, and the Nazarenes [i.e. Christians] and the [‘heretics’] perish as in a moment and be rooted out from the book of life and with the righteous may they not be inscribed. Blessed art thou, O Lord, who humblest the arrogant.’
This is often ironically called ‘the benediction of the heretics’
That who ever kills you will think they are doing God a service. vs 3
We see the martyrdom of Stephen Acts 7:59 “59 And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.””
Acts 12:2 “2 Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword.”
Philip He was scourged, thrown into prison, and afterwards crucified, A. D. 54
Matthew - was slain with a battle axe in the city of Nababah Ad. 60
James the brother of Jesus At the age of ninety-four he was beat and stoned by the Jews; and finally had his brains dashed out with a fuller’s club.
Matthias - He was stoned at Jerusalem and then beheaded.
Thomas Called Didymus, preached the Gospel in Parthia and India, which exciting the rage of the pagan priests, he was martyred by being thrust through with a spear.
Andrew the brother was Peter was crucified.
Mark was dragged to pieces by the people of Alexandria, at the great dignity of Serapis their idol, ending his life under their merciless hands.
Peter - Jerome saith that he was crucified his head being down and his feet upward, himself so requiring, because he was (he said) unworthy to be crucified after the same form and manner as the Lord was.
6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
To convict - ‘to bring someone to an acknowledgment of personal guilt’.
Jesus is now comforting them with the promise of The Holy Spirit. Who is called “The Helper”
Helper- Parakletos, Advocate, Helper, or comforts someone of behalf of another
Outside the NT paralketos is a legal assistant or an advocate in a court of law.
Lexham Theological Wordbook παράκλητος
The concept combines the legal and relational: advocate and helper.
The Holy Spirit is not just our legal assistant but also our relational assistant.
