In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever
In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever
Introduction
Luke 10.38-42 “Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. And she had a sister called Mary, who was also seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the preparations alone? Then tell her to help me.” But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things, but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.””
Main Point
Ps 16.11 "In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”
Prayer
Context
Psalm 16 | A Mikhtam of David.
I. Security (v1-3)
1 Keep me, O God, for I take refuge in You. 2 O my soul, you have said to Yahweh, “You are my Lord; I have no good without You.” 3 As for the saints who are in the earth, They are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight.
Salvation & Protection through Yahweh (v1)
Kept/Guarded by Yahweh
A sigh - a single line
Recognition of the goodness given (v2)
Ps 50.9-10 ““I shall take no young bull out of your house Nor male goats out of your folds. “For every beast of the forest is Mine, The cattle on a thousand hills.”
Ro 11.35 “Or WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIM THAT IT MIGHT BE REPAID TO HIM?”
Childlike dependence
My good is not above You or in addition to You or beside You - You alone without exception are my good
Recognition of the family joined (v3)
1 peter 2.9 “But you are A CHOSEN FAMILY, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”
Deut 26.19 “and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, for praise, a name, and beauty; and that you shall be a holy people to Yahweh your God, as He has spoken.””
Hierarchy - affections above and below
If you love the Holy One you will also love His holy ones
1 Jn 4.20 “If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.”
The living members of the faithful community of the people of God
II. Satisfaction (v4-5)
4 The pains of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour out their drink offerings of blood, Nor will I take their names upon my lips. 5 Yahweh is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot.
Recognition of the futility of the idolators (v4) Folly Rejected
Their drink offerings are not poured out because their hands are stained with blood
“another” is to be take
Ge 3.16 “To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain and conception, In pain you will bear children; Your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.””
Ex 20.3 ““You shall have no other gods before Me.”
Ex 23.13 ““Now concerning everything which I have said to you, beware; and do not mention the name of other gods, nor let them be heard from your mouth.”
OTHER gods NOT MENTIONED BY NAME
2 Sam 23.17 “and he said, “Be it far from me, O Yahweh, that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” Therefore he was not willing to drink it. These things the three mighty men did.”
Ezekiel 32.6 ““I will also make the land drink the discharge of your blood As far as the mountains, And the ravines will be full of you.”
What blood should we take part in?
John 6.53-55 “So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. “For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.”
What blood is abhorrent but will be drunk
Rev 16.6 “for they poured out the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them blood to drink. They deserve it.””
1 Samuel 26:19 ““So now, please let my lord the king listen to the words of his servant. If Yahweh has incited you up against me, let Him accept an offering; but if it is men, cursed are they before Yahweh, for they have driven me out today so that I would have no attachment with the inheritance of Yahweh, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’”
Apart from Christ we can do nothing (v5)
DT 32.9 ““For Yahweh’s portion is His people; Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.”
Lk 10.42 “but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.””
III. Stability (v6-8)
6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Indeed, my inheritance is beautiful to me. 7 I will bless Yahweh who has counseled me; Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night. 8 I have set Yahweh continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Family (v6)
Inheritance in Israel is a stewardship between generations and it is usually associated with the land
God has set up Israel as a land that He loves
Ps 47.4 “He chooses our inheritance for us, The pride of Jacob whom He loves. Selah.”
Inward pleasure is found in what God has provided - closeness to Him in His inheritance (a charming district (K&D)) by God
Highest Delight in the middle of the night (v7)
Is 11.2 “The Spirit of Yahweh will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and might, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of Yahweh.”
Instruction is reins - the mental correction that Yahweh is His - the affirmation of internal faith
Always present (v8)
metaphorically the right hand is the hand of power - often associated with the power of God or a leader or warrior.
To sit at the right hand is the place of extreme honor and is also the place of the accuser in a legal proceeding
Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father - He has a royal status
Also indicated southern direction
Ps 109.31 “For He stands at the right hand of the needy, To save him from those who judge his soul.”
Ps 4.7-8 “You have put gladness in my heart, More than when their grain and new wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O Yahweh, make me to abide in safety.”
WILL NOT CANNOT BE TOPPLED OR TOTTER BECAUSE OF THE CLOSENESS OF YAHWEH
IV. Salvation (v9-11)
Ps 16.9-11 “Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will dwell securely. For You will not forsake my soul to Sheol; You will not give Your Holy One over to see corruption. You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”
Cross Reference
Acts 2:25-31 ““For David says of Him, ‘I SAW THE LORD CONTINUALLY BEFORE ME; BECAUSE HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN. ‘THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE; BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT FORSAKE MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR GIVE YOUR HOLY ONE OVER TO SEE CORRUPTION. ‘YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR PRESENCE.’ “Men, brothers, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. “And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SET one OF THE FRUIT OF HIS BODY ON HIS THRONE, he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER FORSAKEN TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SEE CORRUPTION.”
Acts 13:35 ““Therefore He also says in another Psalm, ‘YOU WILL NOT GIVE YOUR HOLY ONE OVER TO SEE CORRUPTION.’”
Joy, gladness and security (v9)
THIS IS THE RESPONSE OF HIS ASSURANCE - 1 Thes 5.23 “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely, and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
John 20.9 “For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.”

Da 12.2 ““And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to reproach and everlasting contempt.”
Ezekiel 37.12-14 ““Therefore prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I will open your graves and cause you to come up out of your graves, My people; and I will bring you into the land of Israel. “Then you will know that I am Yahweh, when I have opened your graves and caused you to come up out of your graves, My people. “And I will put My Spirit within you, and you will come to life, and I will place you on your own land. Then you will know that I, Yahweh, have spoken and done it,” declares Yahweh.’””
Ps 49.15 “But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, For He will receive me. Selah.”
Ps 17.15 “As for me, I shall behold Your face in righteousness; I will be satisfied with Your likeness when I awake.”
Mk 12.24 “Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures nor the power of God?”
United with Christ (v10)
Sheol is the grave or pit
Ps 49.14-15 “As sheep they are appointed for Sheol; Death will shepherd them; And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, And their form shall be for Sheol to consume, Far away from his habitation. But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, For He will receive me. Selah.”
1 Cor 15.4 “and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,”
Ho 6.2 ““He will make us alive after two days; He will raise us up on the third day, That we may live before Him.”
Jonah 1:17 “And Yahweh appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights.”
The Righteous do not go to Hades CT3
The righteous go to paradise Lk 16.19-31, 23:43
Present with the Lord 2 Cor 5.1-10, Phil 1.19-26
The righteous enjoy blessedness after death and the wicked go to punishment
Hebrews 11.19 “He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he also received him back.”
Hebrews 13.20 “Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, our Lord Jesus,”
John 5.25 ““Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.”
John 5.28-29 ““Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.”
1 Cor 15.51-52 “Behold, I tell you a mystery: we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed.”
Col 1.18 “And He is the head of the body, the church; Who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.”
Rev 1.5 “and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood—”
Rev 20.4-6 “Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their witness of Jesus and because of the word of God, and who also had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand. And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection. Over these the second death has no authority, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years.”
IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE ONE WHO TRUSTS IN YAHWEH TO FALL INTO THE HANDS OF ETERNAL DEATH
THE HOLY ONE IN REFERENCE IN DAVIDS MIND IS HIMSELF AND YET PETER APPLIES IT TO CHRIST
The Path of Life (v11)
Application
Mk 12.24 “Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures nor the power of God?”
Mk 12.26-27 ““But regarding the fact that the dead are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB’? “He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken.””
Pleasures are in His right hand continually - never empty - inexhaustible
