The Holy Spirit Guarantees Eternity
2 Corinthians 5:1-5
INTRODUCTION
FDIC=
Leading up to the Great Depression in the 1920's banks were failing and people lost everything.
people would make runs on the bank until the bank ran out of money.
1933 FDIC was formed- it guaranteed deposits up to $100,000. Today, $250,000.
The government guaranteed the deposit.
Now when banks fail people do not have to panic.
Put money in bank in confidence.
We have the holy Spirit as a guarantee of our salvation.
2 Corinthians 5:1–5 ESV
1 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

4 Ways the Holy Spirit Gives Us Confidence

1- Guarantees an Eternal Body (1)

2 Corinthians 5:1 ESV
1 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
Tent= our earthly body.
ILL- camping with Greenfield youth through a storm.
1 Corinthians 15:50–57 ESV
50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Imperishable= eternal.
Victory= immortal body

2- Guarantees an Eternal Fulfillment (2-3)

2 Corinthians 5:2–3 ESV
2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked.
"groan" , "Longing"= we know that this is not right.
Adam and Even- the body was meant to last for eternity. Designed for no sickness.
Sin brought with it disease and disabilities.
We look in the mirror and see all that needs to be improved.
“not be found naked”= missing something. Not being complete.
There will be a day when we no longer desire a better body. We will have a perfect body.

3- Guarantees an Eternal Life (4)

2 Corinthians 5:4 ESV
4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
"mortal is swallowed up by life"= it is replaced.
Eternal life= quality of life, not length of life.
John 3:36 ESV
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
John 5:24 ESV
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
Eternal Punishment= the alternative to eternal life.
Matthew 25:46 ESV
46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Easy to think Hitler, Stalin, and the like deserve eternal torment.
But all our sin is judged in light of the holiness of God.
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

4- Guarantees an Eternal Preparation (5)

2 Corinthians 5:5 ESV
5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
It is God, not us. He prepared us for eternity.
Spirit guarantees it. We are not making our own guarantee.
Guarantee= the down-payment that secures a legal claim. The Spirit is the down-payment given to us by God to secure our salvation.
2 Corinthians 1:21–22 ESV
21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
Establishes= he maintains it. It is held on to firm by God.
Anointed= pour oil to signify a task given by God. Title given.
Anointing of David- years before he became King- guaranteed he would be king.
Sealed= it had a legal significance. it marked what belonged to someone. (branding) It also was used to keep unauthorized people from opening a letter or document.
Our salvation is the work of God and it is held by God.
Our responsibility is to accept the gift of forgiveness.
God provided the gift and he guarantees the completion of it.
We do not choose Jesus because it is what seems best for our life.
Ask: Is it true? If it is true we must submit our life to Him.
CONCLUSION

Has your eternity been guaranteed?
