COVER TO COVER OVERVIEW
TODAY we are going to RUN through the whole OT
I LOVE TV SHOWS — Worst is when they don’t release all at once — I forget what happened before next episode releases — COVER it all at once today
39 BOOKS
28 AUTHORS
2,000 YEARS
90% of all messages preached are in NT. Missing out on all of God’s story.
CREATION — APPLE
God made man. 6 Days — Rested on the 7th.
We were made in God’s image. And given a choice. A free will to choose God or to choose to be master over our own lives. ADAM / EVE MADE CHOICE and sinned against God.
GOD IS HOLY / PERFECT we are not. because of that sin there was a separation. GOD COULD HAVE SAID “STINKS TO BE YOU”. But what did He do? God takes an innocent animal, and uses it’s hide to clothe Adam and Eve. FIRST GLIMPSE AT WHAT JESUS WOULD DO. This glimpse at forgiveness and redemption and sacrifice.
THE FRANCHISE PLAYERS
ABRAHAM, ISSAC & JACOB. Not perfect, they are fallen, BUT THEY ARE MEN OF FAITH.
ABRAHAM — Father of nations. count the stars thats your offspring. Sand on sea shore. Go to the land i’ll show you.
ISSAC — Abraham son that was promised to him. Waited 25 years for God’s promise.
JACOB — Issac son. Made a lot of mistakes but still used by God and a man of faith. Jacob had a son named JOSEPH. Coat of many colors. Sold into slavery by his own brothers. Works his way up to second in command over Egypt. Drought and Famine comes. His family comes for food and he saves them. THEY LIVE THERE AND GROW IN POPULATION. That ends up upsetting one of the next Pharaohs. And we come to the book of EXODUS.
EXODUS
Because Pharaoh wasn’t a fan of the Israelites, they were enslaved by them for 400 years. INTRO MOSES! Called by God to lead his people. Did’t want to because he had a speech problem. GOD CHOOSES UNLIKELY PEOPLE TO DO GREAT THINGS.
MOSES LEADS them out of slavery… See the foreshadowing to Jesus? WE WERE IN BONDAGE to Sin and Jesus made a way out for us.
The Israelites are set free! They then are lead to the place where God gives the the 10 commandments and Plans for the Tabernacle Dwelling place for God until they reached promised land.
Supposed to be a quick trip to Promised land… takes 40 YEARS. DISOBEDIENCE God allows that Generation to not see the promised land, they die before they ever get there. Missed out on God all because of Disobedience.
CONQUEST
THE GREAT REAL ESTATE DEAL
When Moses passes away a new man takes over JOSHUA
He takes them to PROMISE LAND! Tells Joshua to move all the ungodly people out so His people could move in. Just like Abraham — Obey me and everything’s gonna go great… ALMOST DID IT. They disobey God
REPETITIVE STORY — GOD’S GRACE
When they mess up God sends...
JUDGES
SAMSON — GIDEON — SAMUEL
SPIN CYCLE — FALLING, FAILURE, FORGIVENESS
Can you see the frustration?? Judges tried to bring them back
AND HERE is what the people did...
KINGS
You know how Kids want what they don’t have? Christmas? — Like their toy until they see what the next person opens.
GOD’S PEOPLE SAW THAT OTHER NATIONS HAD KINGS — SO THEY WANTED ONE — DON’T NEED ONE we have God. KEEP ASKING. God says okay cool here ya go. PART OF OUR FREEDOM OF CHOICE.
GOD GAVE THEM SAUL
Handsome — 4.3 Mil on Insta — 6 Pack Abs — SUPER JEALOUS guy tried to have David killed
DAVID — Awesome but messed up — BATHSHEBA
THE KINGS didn’t get God’s people where they thought they would… so then you have the… —
DIVISION
DIVISION of the 12 tribes.
ISRAEL to the North — JUDAH to the South
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Nahum, and Habakkuk, and people like that, and Micah and Malachi. They are all coming around during this time.
When we search for our own way… not God’s way… We end up living a divided life. And that happens to them…
EXILE
Assyria comes and takes out 10 of the 12 tribes.
God will allow you to make your own choices. But the consequences are still going to come…
The two tribes, Judah, were taken captive from the Babylonians and then to fast forward because of time. Persia comes in and conquers everybody and they allow some of the Jews to come back
THE RETURN
(Jerusalem), rebuild the walls (Nehemiah), worship (Ezra), and then you have it all moving toward Malachi, who says, “You’re still not living for the Lord.. All the way to the last book of OT Malachi — Under a CURSE…
THE SILENCE
For the next 400 years God is silent. The people were used to, whether good or bad hearing from God. But it’s like God’s phone was on silent. While in your Bible it’s just one page between the old and new testament, After Malachi delivers the last words from God there is a 400 year GAP before they hear from God again.
Malachi’s last prophetic word from God was a rebuke it was letting the know that they are still running from God. Not living like they should. And then 400 years.
But as we talked about at Christmas this was setting the scene for Jesus.
THAT’S THE 30,000 FT OVERVIEW OF THE OT!!
