Text: Joel and Obadiah Lesson 14
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit
Introduction:
One of our core values at BSF is dependence on God..
When we pray we show our dependence on God.
But-at a deeper level when we pray- we are asking the Holy Spirit to move in and through us.
As believersm, when we approach God- the Holy Spirit is always with us. His spirit indwells in us and will never leave.
The Holy Spirit works in and through believers to convict, teach, really break
Bridge to Doctrine:
In Joel 2, God promises a future outpouring of the Holy Spirit (2:28-29)
and..as we know…what God says will happen. will happen.
And in Acts 2- Peter quotes Joel 2, showing us that the Spirit had in fact been poured out at Pentecost
Just as God had said.
The Holy Spirit worked in our prophets, Joel and Obadiah , to reveal God’s message to the people- and today he lives inside of each of you- revealing God to you as you continue to study the word’s God spoke through the prophets so many years ago..
As believers- the Holy Spirit lives in you and gives you everything you need to live life on earth now and also for eternity.
Key Points and Insertion of Doctrine into Passage:
We know that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit exhibit unity and perfection.
The three persons of God work together harmoniously to accomplish God’s purposes.
The Holy Spirit played an active role in creation, spoke God’s messages through His prophets, and launched the early Church to take the gospel to the world…and he is actively working today to draw
The Holy Spirit actively works to draw people to salvation in Christ and to exalt God.
The Holy Spirit permanently indwells every believer, revealing and applying God’s truth in ways that transform us to grow in love for God and obedience to Him.
The Holy Spirit also fills believers, equipping and empowering them for specific work for God and to witness for Him.
When I do not believe in God’s active work on earth through His Spirit, I fail to see the wonders of what God is doing today. I relegate God to history, but miss His intimate involvement in my life and this world.
When I believe that the Holy Spirit speaks to me in a way I can hear and understand, I learn to listen for His voice as I read Scripture and seek God’s leading. I welcome the Holy Spirit’s conviction of my sin and rejoice in the way He awakens my desire and ability to obey God. I am grateful for how He enables my spiritual growth.
Possible Applications for Leaders:
We cannot overstate the profound benefits of the Holy Spirit’s presence and power in a believer’s life.
o God did not leave us without help. He put His own Spirit within us. How amazing!
o How have you experienced the Holy Spirit as your Counselor, Advocate, Comforter, and Teacher?
o The Holy Spirit’s presence within you reflects how much God loves you.
The Holy Spirit works through you and in you as you serve the Lord.
o Apart from the Holy Spirit’s power, we labor in vain. We cannot do God’s work in our power alone.
o In what ways have you experienced God actively speaking to you through His Word and moving you to obedience?
o How should your confidence in serving God this week grow as you realize the Holy Spirit does what you cannot?
The ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in your life is God’s seal on you – settled and secure for eternity.
o Not only does the Holy Spirit bring us to salvation, but also His sanctifying work continues as we walk on earth.
o Do you welcome the Holy Spirit’s conviction and presence as proof that you belong to God?
o Will you allow the Holy Spirit to plant praise in your heart for all that God has done? This will be the song believers
sing for eternity. To God alone be the glory!
Tomorrow for our mini study- we will have women visiting BSF- some of them opening up God’s word for the first time.
The Holy Spirit is the one who gives them the eyes to see and understand God’s word…
If someone walks about a believer tomorrow it’s because of the work of the Holy Spirit in them. We get to be God’s vessels as we follow the Holy Spirit’s leading. Praise God He chooses to use us for his work.
So tomorrow- ask the Holy Spirit not only to fill you, but to pour himself out over our class.
So that as women and children come to know Him- God gets all the glory. It’s His work we are doing. What a blessing for us to be used by Him.
In a moment we are going to pray- God promised to pour His spirit out- let’s invite him into this place- into our LM and into our class tomorrow.
When we ask…we know that he will…he promised it…and as he does- we get to watch Him work and respond by giving Him all the glory and credit.
Any transformation that happens in us is a work of the Spirit in us...
