Jeremiah 9:23–24 (KJV 1900)
23 Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Neither let the mighty man glory in his might, Let not the rich man glory in his riches: 24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, That he understandeth and knoweth me, That I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: For in these things I delight, saith the Lord.
The burden on my heart is for the congregation God to have a healthy understanding and revelation knowledge of the LORD.
God wants to known and understand Him.
Understanding and knowing God is the key to the growth and maturity in life of disciples of Jesus Christ.
My prayer the church today is that we deeply understand and know our LORD Jesus Christ.
Lets look at the background and historical context of passage
Jeremiah is young man about 22 year old
There has been resurgence of spiritual activity in the nation.
The temple has been restored and the worship in the temple has been restored.
The people had a false sense of security.
They began to trust in religious observances rather than develop a relationship with and a trust in God.
Therefore God spoke through the prophet the words of this passage
He saith what not to do:
Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom:
There were people that though human knowledge, wisdom that celebrated boasted depended on their prudence, enlightenment, and to deal with complex.
There is nothing wrong with wisdom and skill as long as we reverence honor God as the source and foudation,
Wisdom is using knowledge correctly
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: And the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Wisdom with glorifying God is foolish
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Let not the mighty glory in might
6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, Saith the Lord of hosts.
Human resources are limited, man power is limited. We allow to LORD to work through us.
Let not rich man glory in his riches
17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
Rich young ruler was not willing to lay down his riches to follow Christ. He did have the revelation honor obedience and understanding God was greater.
17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? 27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.
4 But let him that glorieth glory in this, That he understandeth and knoweth me,
I read a book call the seven habits of Highly effective people one the principle was to Seek to understand rather than to understood.
This principle is especially true when it comes to God! Lord open my eyes and my ears to understand and know you.
7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: And with all thy getting get understanding.
We must seek to know and understand God
6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: Because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: Seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
That I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: For in these things I delight, saith the Lord.
Lovingkindness (Hased) A loving God that keeps his covenant to His people
Faithfulness of God: Everything that God has promised will come to pass Deut 7:9
9 Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
Love of God: God holds the well-being of others as His primary concern 1 John 4:8
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
Judgement and Righteous- God is a righteous Judge ; he makes no mistake. We are limited in our perspective but God is unlimited.
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
Today as we close let worship God and ask help to help to know and understand him better.
