Review & Overview
Review & Overview
1. Previous Study’s Review
1. Previous Study’s Review
Last time we were together we looked at 4 of the 10 plagues that came upon Egypt…
Water to Blood… Frogs… Lice… Flies…
And the one thing all 4 plagues had in common was that, Pharaoh hardened his heart toward God…
Then Pharaoh tried to get Moses to compromise, he said you make sacrifice to your God only do it in the land… in other words don’t leave Egypt…
Moses didn’t give in… Moses didn’t compromise… example…
2. Current Study’s Overview
2. Current Study’s Overview
So today in chps.9 & 10 we’ll be looking at 5 more plagues…
1. The Fifth Plague: Death of Livestock Vs. 1-7
1. The Fifth Plague: Death of Livestock Vs. 1-7
1.1 Vs. 1
1.1 Vs. 1
This will be the 6th time Moses tells Pharaoh, let My people go… & on all previous 5 occasions Moses was Shut Down…
Yet even with all of this opposition… being turned down & shut down every time…
Moses didn’t lose heart… Moses didn’t give up… He totally trusted that what he was doing is exactly what God called him to do… & result the byproduct didn’t matter…
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
1.2 Vs. 2-3
1.2 Vs. 2-3
The 5th plague is the death of all the livestock of the Egyptians, vs.6, the result of that will be a severe pestilence, vs.3b…
Remember the water was turned to blood & there were piles of dead frogs everywhere, so that coupled with the death of all the livestock would no doubt bring a severe pestilence…
1.3 Vs. 4
1.3 Vs. 4
Like in Ex.8:22 with the 4th plague the Flies, God will make a difference between Egypt & Israel…
The Children of Israel were to be Set Apart… what a picture that paints for us… we too are to be Set Apart from Egypt or the World…
17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”
1.4 Vs. 5-7
1.4 Vs. 5-7
Isn’t God gracious… He said this plague would come upon you tomorrow… I would have sent immediately… Pharaoh you had your chance & you blew it…
Aren’t you glad God doesn’t treat us that way… He is so gracious… so longsuffering…
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
2. The Sixth Plague: Boils Vs. 8-12
2. The Sixth Plague: Boils Vs. 8-12
2.1 Vs. 8-9
2.1 Vs. 8-9
The ashes Moses took were not from just any furnace, this is the Kiln furnace, the furnace the Israelites used to make the bricks… the furnaces that brought them so much pain & suffering…
So the same furnace will be used to bring pain & suffering to the Egyptians… poetic justice…
This is the first plague to affect the people physically… it brought Boils…
2.2 Vs. 10-11
2.2 Vs. 10-11
So all the Egyptians had boils these open sores oozing with pus and blood…
The 1st Bowl Judgment in Rev.16:2 resulted in a loathsome sore or a boil to all who took the mark and worshipped the Beast…
2 So the first went and poured out his bowl upon the earth, and a foul and loathsome sore came upon the men who had the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image.
2.3 Vs. 12
2.3 Vs. 12
Back in Ex.4:21 God told Moses that He would harden Pharaoh’s heart & here He does…
We’ve seen Pharaoh harden his own heart… kabad: honor, glorify, honorable…
When the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart… kaw-zak: strengthen, make firm, confirm…
So the Lord confirmed the decision that Pharaoh had already made…
That does not negate the Sovereignty of God…
18 Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens.
But the Sovereignty of God does not negate the Free Will of Man… we have a choice to make…
15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
3. The Seventh Plague: Hail & Fire Vs. 13-35
3. The Seventh Plague: Hail & Fire Vs. 13-35
3.1 Vs. 13-21
3.1 Vs. 13-21
Like the Egyptians we too have a choice to make… we can Fear God & Obey Him… or Not…
And there are always consequences to not fearing God or obeying Him… vs.22.
3.2 Vs. 22-26
3.2 Vs. 22-26
at the 7th Bowl Judgment in Rev.16:21 God will once again send hail at the end of the Trib. 75lbs.
But once again there is a distinction between Egypt & Isreal…
21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.
3.3 Vs. 27-35
3.3 Vs. 27-35
Flax: tall blue flower to make linen cloth…
Barley: for slaves, animals.
harvest: March.
Wheat: & Spelt: or rye lower quality than wheat, better than barley… harvest: July.
In vs.27 Pharaoh confessed his sin… but in vs.35 he didn’t repent of his sin…
4. The Eighth Plague: Locusts Ch. 10:1-20
4. The Eighth Plague: Locusts Ch. 10:1-20
4.1 Vs. 1-7
4.1 Vs. 1-7
Pharaoh’s problem is in vs.3, Pride… he refused to Humble himself… and because of his pride he couldn’t see that Egypt was destroyed… vs.7…
APPLICATION: Pride causes us not to see the problems we bring on ourselves… Pride causes us not to see that we are the problem… Pride says, it’s always someone else…
We need to humble ourselves… because if we don’t God will… & He don’t mess around…
4.2 Vs. 8-20
4.2 Vs. 8-20
So the Lord is not done using Pharaoh to Accomplish His Purpose… to Show His Power…
5. The Ninth Plague: Darkness Vs. 21-29
5. The Ninth Plague: Darkness Vs. 21-29
5.1 Vs. 21-26
5.1 Vs. 21-26
So the 9th plague was darkness that could be felt, vs.21… in Rev.16:10 the 5th Bowl was darkness that brought pain…
10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain.
ILLUSTRATION: Have you ever gone somewhere you can feel a spiritually dark place?
5.2 Vs. 27-29
5.2 Vs. 27-29
Moses will see Pharaoh’s face again… But only to say goodbye...
31 Then he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, “Rise, go out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel. And go, serve the Lord as you have said.
But in this 9th plague Pharaoh tries once again to get Moses to Compromise… but He doesn’t…
ENDING...
