Introduction

This week we are continuing our series called New. This series is based on 2 Corinthians 5:17
2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
Last week we talked about how when we give our lives to Christ that God gives us a new focus, and that our focus changes from ourselves to others.
This week we are going to talk about how God changes our attitudes

Be like minded

Philippians 2:1–4 NIV
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
This is Paul speaking to the church in Philippi. The city of Philippi was a Roman colony and the people who lived there were given all the rights of a Roman citizen.
This gave the people many special rights and privileges as we can see in Acts 22:25-29
Acts 22:25–29 NIV
As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?” When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. “What are you going to do?” he asked. “This man is a Roman citizen.” The commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes, I am,” he answered. Then the commander said, “I had to pay a lot of money for my citizenship.” “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied. Those who were about to interrogate him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains.
Similarly by being an American we have special privileges and rights that many people around the world do not have, and yet we are being reminded that we all have the same goal, and that is to make Jesus known.
John the Baptist said it best “He must increase, but I must decrease.”
Is that the thought that we have of ourselves?

What is Christ’s attitude?

Philippians 2:6–8 NIV
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!
Jesus found himself having the mindset of a servant. He came to serve not only God the Father, but also came to serve people.
If there was anyone that would have been able to claim authority over people and able to claim I am better than you it would have been Jesus, however He did not do that.

Results

Philippians 2:9–11 NIV
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Here we see that Jesus fully gave himself up for us, and because of becoming our sacrifice for our sin, We praise Him and worship Him, because He is God.
What does that look like for us?
We wont be worshipped as God, or we shouldnt be anyway.
Mark 9:33–35 NIV
They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”
Jesus is calling us to make ourselves servants of others, to become great in Heaven.

What Now

If we are a follower of Christ then God is changing our attitudes.
Towards ourselves
Not thinking of ourselves better than others
towards others
looking to how we can serve other people
