1 Peter 5:8–12 NKJV
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11 To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. 12 By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand.

Sobriety is what we are supposed to be here for.

Many People have not considered their own sobriety.

Many people are here because this is something to do and they may not have any other social activities.

Some of you have found that this is the only place that you can open up.

There is nothing wrong with finding out that you can open up here.

There is something wrong with staying in the problem… Staying in the problem is a contract with bondage.

The other person in a contract with bondage is Satan.

John 10:10 NKJV
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

in maintaining a relationship with “the problem,” we are maintaining a personal relationship with Satan.

Why Are We Here?

Sobriety!

While it begins abstinence, to abstain is not the whole picture.

1 Peter 5:8 NKJV
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
1 Peter 5:8 starts with two statements:

First: Be sober,

Second: Be Vigilant,

Tonight we are going to deal with the first statement; “Be Sober.”

1) What is sobriety? I’m so Glad you asked.

1 to be sober, to be calm and collected in spirit. 2 to be temperate, dispassionate, circumspect.

James Strong, Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon (Woodside Bible Fellowship, 1995).

To be calm!?

To be Collected in Spirit!?

To be Temperate!?

To be dispassionate!?

To be circumspect!?

To Be circumspect is what the personal inventory steps are all about. Part of being circumspect is being open to all possibilities.

One of the most important possibilities that we need to be open to is that we might be wrong about some things.

Be aware, often times we make identities out of our perspectives, when we discover our perspectives where wrong what happens to our identities?

Often times the only thing we can change about our pasts is our perspectives.

The only thing we have to loose is our inner chaos.

If you look look at verse 8 the enemy is looking for someone to devour.

How does he devour us? through the Chaos that comes from the lack of sobriety.

Sobriety is peace with God, Peace with God leads to peace with self, Peace with self leads to peace with others.

Philippians 4:7 NKJV
7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Sobriety leads to Serenity, = Peace

Tonight's Question: how has practicing the principles lead to peace?
