Our Relationship With God Changes
We are now born again, from above
We are washed from our sins
The Godhead indwells us
We can mature
God created a new man
The old man was corrupt
The new man is righteous
Immersion into the Body of The Christ
Immersion into the Body of The Christ
Translating βαπτίζω (Baptize)
Meaning is “to immerse”
Used of dying garments
The dipping of the sword in blood before battle
Once immersed, the effect is permanent
Does not mean to sprinkle, 1 Peter 1:2
elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
The Immersion of the Spirit is Prophesied, Mark 1:8
Mark 1:8 (NKJV)
I indeed immerse you in water, but He will immerse you in the Holy Spirit.”
We are Immersed into the Body of the Christ, 1 Corinthians 12:12-13
1 Corinthians 12:12–13
For just as the body is one, and has many members and all the members of the one body, being many, are one body, thus also is the Christ. For also by one Spirit we are all immersed into one body, whether Jew, whether Gentile, whether slave, whether free, and we all have been made to drink unto one Spirit
In Adam we are procreated
In Christ we are immersed
The Body is One, Yet has Many Members, 1 Corinthians 12:14
1 Corinthians 12:14
For also the body is not one member, but many
When Placed into the Christ, We Are Given a Spiritual Gift, 1 Corinthians 12:11
1 Corinthians 12:11 (NKJV)
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He determines.
We are not to be ignorance concerning Spiritual Gifts, 1 Corinthians 12:1
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
Revelatory Gift Have Now Ceased, 1 Corinthians 13:8
Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
The Active Gifts Today Are for the Edification of the Church, 1 Corinthians 14:26
How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
Speaking in Tongues was a Sign to the Unbelieving Jew, 1 Corinthians 14:22
Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.
Those claiming to speaking in tongues today are under the influence of another spirit, 2 Corinthians 11:4
For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!
Personal Experience Does not Override Scripture
Healing, Miracles, Word of Knowledge, Testing Spirits, Prophecy Have All Ceased with the Completion of Scripture, 1 Corinthians 13:10
But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
Immerses Us into the Death of Christ, Romans 6:3
Romans 6:3 (NKJV)
Or do you not know that as many as have been immersed into Christ Jesus, into His death have been immersed?
We are therefore raised with Christ to walk in newness of life, Romans 6:4
Romans 6:4 (NKJV)
Therefore, we have been buried with Him through the immersion into the death, in order that just as Christ was raised out from the dead through the proper opinion of the Father, thus also we in newness of life should walk.
Circumcision of the sins of the flesh, Colossians 2:11-12
Colossians 2:11–12 (NKJV)
In Whom you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of the Christ, buried with Him in the immersion, in Whom you also were raised through faith in the working of God, Who raised Him from the dead.
Renders the sin nature ineffective, Romans 6:6
Romans 6:6 (NKJV)
experientially knowing this, that our old man was co-crucified in order that the body of the sin [nature] should be rendered ineffective, so that we are no longer slaves to the sin [nature].
Removes our condemnation, which we had in Adam, Romans 8:1
Romans 8:1 (NKJV)
Then now there is no condemnation to the ones in Christ Jesus,
There is only one Immersion for the Church, Ephesians 4:5
Ephesians 4:5 (NKJV)
one Lord, one faith, one immersion;
Water baptism is for a good conscience, not the removal of the filth of the flesh, 1 Peter 3:21
There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
Water baptism does not bring salvation, 1 Corinthians 1:17
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.
The Beginning of the Church
The Beginning of the Church
Involves Immersion by the Holy Spirit, Acts 1:5
for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Disciples are instructed to stay in Jerusalem until they receive the promise from the Father, Acts 1:4
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me;

The Holy Spirit Comes Upon the Disciples
The Sound of a Rushing Wind, Acts 2:2
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Jerusalem is drawn together because of the sound, Acts 2:5-6
And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.
A sign to the Jews, Acts 2:11
Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”
Dividing of tongues, like fire, Acts 2:3
Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
The Holy Spirit Mentally Controls the Disciples, Acts 2:4
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The Type of Filling They Had Under the Old Testament, Luke 1:15, 67
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.
Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:
Used by the Holy Spirit only in the Beginning of the Church
As a Sign, Acts 2:7-11
Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”
In defence of the Gospel to the Jews, Acts 4:8; 13:9
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel:
Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him
Until the full Revelation came, 1 Corinthians 13:10
But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
Different from the type of filling we have today, Ephesians 5:18
Ephesians 5:18 (NKJV)
And stop being drunk with wine, in which there is no savingness, but be filling where lacking by the Holy Spirit
Signs to the Jews
The Holy Spirit Coming Upon the Believers in Samaria, Acts 8:14-17
Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
The Gentiles, Acts 10:44
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word.
The Disciples of John, Acts 19:1-7
And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?”
So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”
Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Now the men were about twelve in all.
The Rejection from the Jews, and Acceptance of the Gentiles, Acts 13:46
Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.
Other Immersions in Scripture
Other Immersions in Scripture
John’s Baptism was an immersion unto repentance (changing of the mind) Concerning the Messiah, Acts 19:4
Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
He Immersed to Find out Who Was the Messiah, John 1:29-32
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.
Into a Priestly Service, Matthew 3:16
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.
Into the Name, Matthew 28:19
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Peter’s Sermon, Acts 2:38
Acts 2:38 (NKJV)
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ because of the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Phillip in Samaria, Acts 8:12
But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.
Ritual for Eating, Mark 7:2-5
Mark 7:2–5 (NKJV)
Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders. When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash (βαπτίσωνται). And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing (βαπτισμοὺς) of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches.
Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”
Under the law, Hebrews 6:1-2
Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
There is no Scriptural Support for a Second Baptism or a Baptism by Fire for the Church
