The Spirit of The Lord

The Spirit of The Lord
Isaiah 61
Happy 2023
We began 2023 with a great word from the Lord, encouraging us with the promises of Isaiah 60
Isa 60:1 "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.
Isa 60:2 See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you.
Isa 60:3 Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
Isa 60:4 "Lift up your eyes and look about you: All assemble and come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the hip.
Isa 60:5 Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come.
The prophet Isaiah was prophesying about the Messiah and His Kingdom
Isaiah 60, 61, 62 are devoted to the Messiah and His glorious kingdom,
That’s why was so hard for the religious leaders to recognize Jesus when He came the first time, they overlooked Isaiah 53
Isa 53:1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
Isa 53:2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
Isa 53:4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
The religious leaders were expecting Isaiah 60 and 61 to be fulfilled, before Isaiah 53, but Jesus knew that His first coming was not about the glorious kingdom, that he had to come and suffer, die and be raised from the dead, return to His Father and come again a second time.
Jesus taught His disciples, that he was going to be betrayed and crucified, He would rise from the dead on the 3rd day, and Peter rebuked Him, Peter did not understand what was happening.
Mat 16:21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
Mat 16:22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"
The disciples and the religious leaders were all expecting the promises of the glorious kingdom to be fulfilled at that time so they missed what was happening.
When we read scripture don’t make the same mistake
Yes the Day of the Lord is coming
But before it comes
The catching away of the church, the rapture as many call it. After that
The Antichrist is revealed
The Great tribulation begins
The nations gather to destroy Israel
Jesus Returns/Battle of Armageddon
Jesus establishes His Throne in Jerusalem
The Millennial Kingdom begins
last Sunday our dear friend David Rees Thomas spoke to us about “ making the most of our time”
Today I would like to share about the Spirit of the Lord, who was upon Jesus, from Isaiah 61
Luk 4:16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,
Luk 4:17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
Luk 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,
Luk 4:19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
Jesus finished right there in the middle of the second verse Isaiah 61:2, when Jesus was reading the scroll there were no division of verses, that only came on the 14th century. 1448 Rabbi Nathan
Luk 4:20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.
Luk 4:21 He began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
Is important that we look at Isaiah’s description of the Spirit of the Lord
Isa 11:2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD—
Isa 11:3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears;
Isa 11:4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
Isa 11:5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.
Let’s pray
I would like for us to Look at the first 3 verses of Isaiah 61
The prophecy goes on to say.
Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
Isa 61:2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
Isa 61:3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.
This prophecy shows us the effects of sin
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor

1 Poor,

aw-nawv, needy, depressed, humble, sin will impact our lives this way, will leave us poor.
; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted

2 Broken hearted

Everyday we hear of tragedies that leaves us with a broken heart
Husbands who are abandoned by wives, wives abandoned by husbands and the consequences on their children, painful experiences
Parents praying and watching their kids destroying themselves
Sometimes sons and daughters watching their mom or dad destroying themselves
We all have been touched by the destructive power of sin, our hearts are broken, we need to be touched by the power of God, Jesus is the only one who can bind up our hearts
to proclaim liberty to the captives

3 Captive,

shaw baw, transported away, taken away into captivity
Sin is attractive, it promises to a person excitement and pleasure, but soon becomes addictive, and leads us into captivity, like drugs drugs, sex, gambling.
Satan lays the trap if we respond, sin has us captive, and we cannot stop or be free, we become captive, addicted to whatever sin we tolerate in our lives, from complaining to murdering we will become captive.
Jesus has the power to proclaim liberty to captives
and the opening of the prison doors to those who are bound;

4 Sin keeps us bound,

aw-sar, fasten, harness
you find yourself in prison bound, you though you could stop, that you could escape, but now sin has you.
Jesus is the only one who will open the doors of your prison and set you free.
I think about all the tears shad because of sin,
The mothers who have mourn because of the sin of their children,
Jesus will comfort those who Mourn

5 Sin will leave us in Ashes,

people who had all kinds of opportunities, they were even successful at one time, now they have nothing, they lay on ashes. On the streets you will find people from all kinds of background, some were educated professionals.
When you see a homeless person don’t assume they are mentally ill some have been imprisoned by their sins and their sins are destroying them, now they lay on ashes
Jesus will give you a fancy head dress instead of ashes
I have a friend here in Waikoloa who at one time he was a very successful contractor, became addicted to alcohol, end up losing everything, his marriage, his business, money he became a homeless living under the bridges in LA , by the grace of God he heard the gospel he turn his life to Jesus, got saved, God set him free, he received some help got out from the streets, he was able to work again, God blessed him, I just blessed his house in Waikoloa before Covid-19.
today
To those who are captive Jesus is telling you that He will set you free
The Messiah has come to open the doors of the prison and set you free
If you recognize that you are in prison and bound Jesus will set you free
If you see only ashes around yourself the power of Jesus can change the ashes
If you are Mourning , He will anoint you with the oil of joy
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, for the glory of his name .
This all happens when we surrender our lives and ask Jesus to set us free.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon us who welcomes Jesus as our Lord and savior, we become one with Jesus and the Father, the same ministry of Jesus will be granted to us.
Joh 14:11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.
Joh 14:12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
Joh 14:13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
make Jesus the Lord of our lives.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Joh 3:16
To receive Jesus, we need to accept Him as God’s son, repent from our sins and a life of selfishness, we need ask Him to be our Lord and savior, not that you deserve it, but is a gift from God.
If this is your desire today, please repeat this prayer after me?
Heavenly Father I’m sinner,
I’m sorry for my sins,
I’m willing to turn away from my sins.
I receive Christ as my savior,
I confess him as Lord
from this moment on I want to follow and serve him,
in the fellowship of his church,
In Jesus name. Amen!
